The National Youth Service (NYS) has announced a nationwide recruitment exercise for volunteers, set to take place from Monday, February 10, to Saturday, February 15, 2025. This drive, highlighted in a public notice in the Tuesday edition of My Gov, will span 384 centers across the country, offering opportunities for youth to contribute to national development while gaining valuable skills.
According to the NYS Commandant General, prospective candidates must meet specific requirements to qualify. Applicants must be Kenyan citizens aged 18 to 24 years, residing in the respective sub-county of recruitment, and have attained a mean grade of D plain or higher in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE).
Those interested in applying must present their original national identity cards, academic certificates, and one set of photocopies of these documents at the recruitment centers. A certificate of good conduct is also mandatory. Additionally, candidates should be prepared to undergo medical check-ups and rigorous physical training as part of the selection process. Successful recruits will be expected to offer voluntary service anywhere in Kenya.
The selected candidates will report for a six-month non-combat paramilitary training at the NYS Paramilitary Academy in Gilgil and the NYSTTI in Naivasha. Specific reporting dates and times will be communicated in the calling letters issued to successful applicants.
Special consideration will be given to orphans who meet the qualifications, provided they can present documentary proof such as death certificates or burial permits of their parents. Persons with disabilities are encouraged to participate, provided they can handle the physical demands of training. Additionally, individuals with notable sports skills and talents will receive special consideration.
The NYS emphasized its zero-tolerance policy on corruption, warning against canvassing or offering bribes to secure admission. The Service clarified that such practices are offenses that could result in disqualification or prosecution. NYS has encouraged the public to report any such incidents directly to the Commandant General at the hotline 020-2400129.
This initiative reflects NYS’s commitment to youth empowerment, national service, and inclusivity. Aspiring candidates are encouraged to seize this opportunity to acquire critical skills and contribute meaningfully to the nation.
