The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has firmly dismissed allegations of internal division, accusing certain factions and the media of spreading baseless rumours to destabilize the party. Acting Party Leader Prof. Anyang’ Nyong’o issued a strongly worded statement reaffirming the party’s unity and resilience, labeling the rumors as part of a calculated scheme by “enemies of democracy.”
“We are aware of the deliberate rumour-mongering machinery orchestrated by enemies of democracy in our country, whose sole mission is to destabilize our party. Let it be known that ODM is stronger and more united than ever,” Nyong’o asserted. He also emphasized the party’s unwavering commitment to justice, democracy, and prosperity for all Kenyans.
Nyong’o’s statement follows recent reports suggesting a rift within ODM, especially in light of Raila Odinga’s potential absence as he vies for the African Union Commission chairmanship next month. Speculations have emerged about cracks in the party’s leadership, fueled by disagreements over its approach to the next election and its current working relationship with President William Ruto’s government.
Some insiders claimed that ODM’s alliance with Ruto’s administration could pose a risk to the opposition party, especially given perceptions of the government’s unpopularity. However, Nyong’o dismissed these claims, criticizing the media for misrepresenting ODM’s internal activities.
“While we fully support and defend media freedom, which is a cornerstone of our democracy, we equally call for fair treatment by the Fourth Estate,” Nyong’o said. He expressed disappointment over the consistent negative portrayal of ODM, particularly the characterization of routine party meetings as “crisis” gatherings.
The Acting Party Leader urged the media to adopt fairness and accuracy in their reporting, stressing that ODM will not be distracted by propaganda. “We will not be swayed by baseless and lazy allegations,” he said, reiterating the party’s focus on advancing its democratic agenda.
As the party prepares for upcoming political milestones, Nyong’o’s statement seeks to project strength and unity, countering narratives that might undermine ODM’s influence and strategic goals.
