As Kenya’s political landscape continues to shift, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has reaffirmed its position as the main opposition force, preparing to challenge President William Ruto in the 2027 general elections. Speaking in an exclusive interview, ODM Secretary General and Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna emphasized that the party remains united and is actively preparing for the upcoming polls.
Despite the perceived blurring lines between the government and opposition, Sifuna dismissed claims that ODM is divided over its stance on Ruto’s administration. He reiterated that the party is working in line with Raila Odinga’s directive to maintain its opposition identity and build towards the 2027 elections. According to Sifuna, any personal opinions from ODM members supporting Ruto do not reflect the party’s official position.
ODM’s Leadership Transition and Raila’s Influence
Sifuna reassured supporters that despite Raila Odinga’s potential departure should he win the African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship, the party remains stable. While he did not speculate on Raila’s replacement, Sifuna stated that ODM continues to operate under the principles set by its long-serving leader.
He also dismissed claims of internal discord, asserting that the party is following clear instructions from its leadership to remain in opposition, stay true to its values, and prepare for the 2027 elections.
Mounting Political Pressure and 2027 Prospects
With speculation on whether ODM will support Ruto’s re-election, Sifuna insisted that the party is committed to fielding its own presidential candidate. He acknowledged that while some ODM members may admire aspects of Ruto’s leadership, he remains focused on strengthening ODM’s base to secure victory in 2027.
Highlighting the close 2022 election results, Sifuna pointed out that Kenya Kwanza has lost significant political ground, especially in the Mt. Kenya region. He emphasized that if the Azimio coalition remains intact and retains its strongholds, it has a clear path to victory.
Nairobi Politics and 2027 Ambitions
On Nairobi governance, Sifuna dismissed criticism that he has been silent on Governor Johnson Sakaja’s administration, citing his active role in Senate oversight. He reaffirmed his commitment to holding the county government accountable while emphasizing that primary oversight responsibility lies with Members of County Assembly (MCAs).
As for his political future, Sifuna confirmed that he will be seeking re-election as Nairobi Senator in 2027, dismissing speculation about other political ambitions. His focus, he stated, remains on effective oversight and legislative work to improve the lives of Nairobi residents.
