An Ohio man is facing serious charges after allegedly causing the death of a 1-year-old girl by repeatedly slamming her head onto the floor when she wouldn’t stop crying. The incident occurred on December 5, 2024, and the baby girl succumbed to her injuries two weeks later.
Michael Mayor, 34, was arrested on December 11 after investigators determined he was responsible for the child’s severe injuries. Initially, Mayor was charged with six felonies, including felonious assault and child endangerment. However, on December 20, it was reported that the baby had died from the injuries he inflicted, prompting further legal action.
According to police reports, the babysitter, who was watching the child at the time, noticed the baby unresponsive and pale when she checked on her in the afternoon. The babysitter had left the toddler in Mayor’s care earlier that morning while she took other children to school. When she returned, Mayor claimed to have placed the baby down for a nap on the bedroom floor. However, by 3:12 p.m., the babysitter found the child in distress and called 911.
The baby was rushed to Dayton Children’s Hospital, where doctors discovered a skull fracture, subdural hematoma, and multiple other injuries that were consistent with a “massive impact.” These injuries were determined to have been caused by forceful physical trauma. The child’s condition was critical, and doctors later confirmed that her injuries were life-threatening.
In his statements to authorities, Mayor allegedly admitted to shaking the child in frustration when she cried louder. He reportedly told police that he slammed her head onto the floor several times in an attempt to silence her. According to his confession, the assaults occurred on the bedroom floor, not on any soft surface like blankets. After the child stopped crying, Mayor assumed she had fallen asleep and left her lying on the floor.
Investigators quickly focused on Mayor as the primary suspect, given that he was the only one with the child at the time of the incident. The babysitter had not been present when the injuries occurred, and the police determined that Mayor’s actions were deliberate and violent. His admission to shaking and slamming the child, coupled with the physical evidence of severe head trauma, led to his arrest and the subsequent charges.
Mayor is currently being held on a $1 million bond, and additional charges may be filed as the investigation progresses. His next court date is scheduled for January 2, 2025, for a bond modification hearing. The case has shocked the local community, as the brutality of the crime has left many grappling with the senseless loss of a young life.
This tragic incident highlights the dangers of infant abuse and the devastating consequences of such violent actions. The death of the child has left her family and the community heartbroken, as they mourn the loss of a young life taken far too soon. As the legal process continues, authorities are working to ensure that justice is served for the innocent victim of this horrific crime.
