In a heartfelt message shared on his social media, Mathenge expressed gratitude for the opportunities he had to lead digital innovation and transformation within the media house.
Reflecting on his journey, Mathenge emphasized the privilege of leading key initiatives that shaped NMG’s digital evolution. As the Multimedia Editor at NTV, he played a central role in developing the NTV Kenya website, a vital platform for the station’s diverse content. His leadership was also pivotal during the 2022 elections, where his team’s innovative approach to digital-first storytelling, data visualization, and social media made a significant impact on the station’s coverage and public discourse.
Mathenge’s impact extended beyond digital development. Prior to his role as Managing Editor, he was involved in shaping NMG’s North Star and Content Strategy, which culminated in the creation of the Integrated Newsroom. His leadership in driving audience engagement and digital growth was key in implementing paywalls across major NMG publications such as Nation Africa, Business Daily, and The East African, helping the organization generate sustainable revenue streams while maintaining a focus on quality journalism.
One of his proudest achievements was chairing a task force that developed the NMG Artificial Intelligence Framework and representing NMG in the Media Council of Kenya’s working group on AI guidelines. Mathenge’s work in this space positioned NMG as a forward-thinking media entity, ready to embrace new technologies to enhance its journalistic output.
While Mathenge expressed pride in NMG’s progress, he also acknowledged that the digital journey is ongoing, and there is room for continued growth and innovation. He shared his insights for the company’s future success and expressed confidence in its commitment to investing in its digital future.
As he moves on to new opportunities, Mathenge carries forward invaluable lessons from his time at NMG.
