Weeks after his exit from Nation Media Group (NMG), Oliver Mathenge has embarked on a new chapter in his illustrious career. Taking to LinkedIn, Mathenge announced his new role as an Editorial and Production Consultant at Oxygène Marketing Communications Ltd.
Expressing excitement about the new opportunity, Mathenge said, “I look forward to learning new things and offering my expertise to deliver the best for all Oxygene clients.” His appointment marks a significant milestone in his career, which has been characterized by innovation, leadership, and a forward-thinking approach to media and technology.
Mathenge’s transition comes after a three-year stint at NMG, where he served as Managing Editor for Audience and Engagement. During his tenure, he was instrumental in driving initiatives that leveraged emerging technologies to enhance journalistic practices. One of his notable achievements was chairing a task force that developed the NMG Artificial Intelligence Framework, a pioneering effort in integrating AI into media operations. Additionally, he represented NMG on the Media Council of Kenya’s (MCK) working group on AI guidelines.
In his LinkedIn post, Mathenge reflected on his transformative journey at NMG, highlighting the lessons learned and the collaborative spirit that defined his experience. His departure from NMG was announced on December 27, 2023, signaling the end of a chapter that had seen him spearhead audience engagement strategies and embrace the evolving digital landscape.
Prior to his role at NMG, Mathenge worked at The Star, Kenya, where he made his mark as the Digital Editor. His extensive background in digital journalism and communications has also seen him dedicate time to training others in the field, contributing to the growth of Kenya’s media industry.
Mathenge’s new role at Oxygène Marketing Communications Ltd aligns with his passion for innovation and strategic communication. The year 2024, as he noted, is a time to explore insights and ideas in media, digital platforms, and technological advancements.
Meanwhile, the MCK continues to advance discussions on AI integration in journalism. On Monday, MCK CEO David Omwoyo invited public feedback on draft guidelines for AI use in media, emphasizing the importance of ethical practices and public participation in shaping policy.
As Mathenge embarks on this new chapter, his journey reflects a commitment to driving progress in media and technology, leaving a lasting impact on the industry.
