A middle-aged man sustained serious injuries following a collision between a lorry and a boda boda in Ngurubani town, Mwea, Kirinyaga County. The accident occurred on Monday at approximately 9:00 a.m. along ACK Church Road, leaving the boda boda rider trapped beneath the lorry that was transporting sand.
Eyewitnesses report that the boda boda rider was heading towards the Mwea rice mills when the lorry struck him from behind. Residents, led by Peter Thuku, rushed to the scene to rescue the man, eventually freeing him after nearly 30 minutes of effort. The injured rider was then rushed to a nearby private hospital, where he is reportedly receiving treatment for serious injuries.
In a disturbing turn of events, the lorry driver fled the scene immediately after the accident, prompting police to launch a manhunt. The lorry has since been impounded and is being held at Wang’uru police station. “The lorry is currently at Wang’uru police station as we search for the driver,” confirmed a traffic police officer.
This latest incident has sparked outrage among Ngurubani residents, who cite frequent accidents along this stretch of road. Many are calling for the urgent installation of speed bumps to prevent further loss of life.
“This road has become a death trap. Just the other day, two children lost their lives, and one was seriously injured. Authorities must act quickly,” lamented Thuku.
The residents attribute the rising number of accidents to speeding vehicles and lack of proper road safety measures. They have urged local leaders and traffic authorities to intervene, stressing that their lives are at constant risk whenever they use the road.
This incident highlights the urgent need for enhanced road safety measures in Mwea. As residents await action, they remain hopeful that speed bumps will be erected soon to prevent similar tragedies.
