Narc Kenya leader, Martha Karua, has assured that the Opposition will unite behind a single candidate in the upcoming 2027 general elections. Speaking in a statement on X, Karua emphasized that the country’s interests should take precedence over individual ambitions, stressing that Kenya is “bigger than any one of us.” She made it clear that while each candidate is free to popularize their party and build their political brand, they will eventually converge and agree on one candidate to represent the Opposition.
Karua’s remarks come in response to a question raised by an X user, who expressed concerns about the potential fragmentation of the opposition vote if candidates like herself, Kalonzo Musyoka, Okiya Omtatah, and former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i decide to run for president independently. The user pointed out that such a scenario would likely force a run-off between President William Ruto and the opposition, ultimately giving Ruto an advantage due to potential alliances with some of the opposition candidates.
Karua’s call for unity is echoed in the broader context of ongoing discussions and political realignments ahead of 2027. The Opposition is exploring alliances as they prepare to challenge Ruto’s administration. Recently, Karua met with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, signaling a potential collaboration. During their meeting, held at Karua’s rural home in Kimunye, Kirinyaga County, the two leaders expressed a shared commitment to unite the Mt Kenya region and the country as a whole, despite their differing political backgrounds.
Gachagua, who was recently ousted as UDA’s deputy party leader, plans to unveil his new political party next month. He commended Karua for her dedication to public service and her consistent fight for justice, acknowledging that while they often find themselves on opposite sides of the political spectrum, collaboration is always possible for the greater good of the nation.
Both Karua and Gachagua pledged to prioritize the welfare of the people in their future political endeavors, emphasizing the importance of addressing Kenya’s challenges together. The partnership reflects the growing sentiment among Opposition leaders that unification, rather than fragmentation, is the key to winning the 2027 elections.
In addition to Gachagua, Karua has also reached out to other political figures such as Kalonzo Musyoka and DAP-K leader Eugene Wamalwa, signaling a broadening of the Opposition’s unity efforts. As Kenya heads toward the 2027 election, the Opposition’s ability to present a united front will be crucial in challenging President Ruto’s continued dominance.
