Kenya Kwanza Chief Whip Sylvanus Osoro has vowed to initiate impeachment proceedings against Public Service Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi, accusing him of undermining the government by publicly criticizing its handling of rising abductions. Speaking at an education function in Nyamarambe, South Mugirango, Osoro condemned Muturi’s approach, suggesting that the CS should have raised his concerns in Cabinet meetings with President William Ruto rather than airing them in public.
Osoro outlined three courses of action for Muturi: issue a public apology, resign, or face impeachment once Parliament resumes its sessions. The Chief Whip dismissed Muturi’s recent claim that his son had been abducted, instead labeling it an arrest linked to drug-related activities at a Nairobi pub. According to Osoro, Muturi’s failure to directly address the issue with the President or within the Cabinet undermines both the government and public confidence.
This development follows a series of public statements by Muturi, who called for immediate measures to tackle the alarming surge in abductions, an issue that has shaken Kenya’s security apparatus. Muturi’s own family was reportedly affected in June 2024, when his son, Leslie Muturi, was allegedly abducted in Nairobi’s Lavington area. Leslie was later released, but the incident has left the family distressed, with Muturi expressing frustration at the lack of transparency surrounding the abduction. The CS has demanded that security agencies provide data on the number of abducted youths and the current status of those missing.
The Ministry of Interior has faced increasing scrutiny, with human rights groups documenting over 80 abduction cases since June 2024, many involving government critics. Among the missing are Billy Mwangi, Peter Muteti, Bernard Kavuli, Rony Kiplangat, and cartoonist Gideon Kibet, all believed to have been abducted after voicing criticism of the government online.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) continues to probe these cases, with several investigation files nearing completion. However, only Leslie Muturi has formally provided a statement regarding his alleged abduction.
