Paul Odera Leads U-18 Rugby Selection Trials at RFUEA Grounds

The RFUEA Grounds in Nairobi witnessed a significant moment for the future of Kenyan rugby as the National U-18 men’s rugby team trials took place on Sunday. This crucial event, marking the culmination of four months of intense scouting and training, drew 240 aspiring rugby players from across Kenya. The trials were a testament to the commitment and enthusiasm surrounding youth rugby in the country.

Paul Odera, Head of the Kenya U-18 Rugby Program, played a pivotal role in overseeing the selection process. With a clear vision for the future of Kenyan rugby, Odera emphasized the trials’ importance in shaping a cohesive and competitive team. “This is the future of Kenyan rugby because these young men are the ones who will feed into Chipu, Shujaa, Simbas, and top clubs. You’re looking at the future of the game right here,” Odera explained.

The selection process is rigorous, with only 60 players from the initial 240 making it to the next phase. From this group, 30 players will be chosen for the final U-18 squad. This meticulous process ensures that only the most promising and dedicated players advance, reflecting the high standards expected of Kenya’s future rugby stars.

Odera’s vision for the youth program extends beyond the current U-18 focus. He is optimistic about expanding the program to include younger age groups in the future. “We will organize this again next year, as we aim to introduce the U-16 age group program,” he added. This forward-looking approach aims to build a robust pipeline of talent, ensuring that the development of rugby players starts at an even younger age.

A key highlight of Odera’s strategy is the introduction of a youth rugby series. He believes that such a series would provide an essential platform for young athletes to showcase their skills and gain valuable experience. “Of course, a youth series is the place to go. There’s definitely a need for that for these young men to showcase what they can do,” he said.

The trials were not only about identifying talent but also about building a team that can compete on the international stage. The ultimate goal is a training tour in South Africa, where the selected U-18 team will play competitive matches against international teams. This tour is designed to give the young players a taste of high-level competition and help them gain crucial international experience.

The trials were a display of both individual talent and team potential. Players showcased their skills in various positions, with each one vying for a spot in the prestigious U-18 squad. The event was a blend of excitement and intensity, with coaches and selectors closely evaluating every performance.

His focus on building a solid foundation for future teams reflects a long-term vision for Kenyan rugby, aiming to elevate the sport to new heights.

As the trials concluded, the selected players now face the challenge of maintaining their form and preparing for the next steps. With Odera and his team closely monitoring their progress, the future looks promising for Kenyan rugby. The focus now shifts to the formation of a strong U-18 squad and the exciting prospect of international competition.

The trials at RFUEA Grounds marked a significant milestone in Kenyan rugby, setting the stage for a new generation of players to emerge and make their mark on the sport. With ongoing efforts to enhance the youth program and expand opportunities, the future of Kenyan rugby appears bright, fueled by the passion and dedication of its young athletes.
