The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has commenced its annual performance evaluation, a critical exercise aimed at assessing its delivery of key objectives for the 2023/2024 period. This review, anchored on KNEC’s performance contract, seeks to strengthen accountability and ensure the organization meets its commitments to stakeholders.
Eliud Owalo, the Deputy Chief of Staff in charge of Performance and Delivery Management, highlighted that the evaluation focuses on strategic areas critical to KNEC’s operations. Among these are the administration of national examinations, e-assessment in teacher education, and the implementation of competency-based assessment (CBA) tools. Other focal points include the management of school-based assessments and the operation of the CBA portal, which has become a cornerstone for seamless and secure data handling in the education sector.
The KNEC team, led by Chief Executive Officer David Njengere, is expected to demonstrate its progress in achieving the set goals within the stipulated timeframe. This exercise is pivotal in ensuring the council maintains high standards in overseeing national examinations and related assessment tools, which are integral to the successful rollout of Kenya’s Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).
A key element under review is the administration of national examinations, a critical responsibility of KNEC. As a key driver of educational standards in Kenya, the council has the mandate to ensure that examinations are conducted with the highest levels of integrity and transparency.
The e-assessment component for teacher education and competency-based assessment tools reflects the council’s commitment to integrating technology in its operations. By leveraging digital platforms, KNEC aims to enhance efficiency and align its practices with global educational standards.
This performance evaluation underscores the government’s emphasis on institutional accountability and results-oriented management within the public sector. As the process unfolds, stakeholders are optimistic that it will reaffirm KNEC’s commitment to delivering on its mandate while identifying areas for improvement to foster growth in Kenya’s education system.
The outcomes of this evaluation will provide insights into KNEC’s operational strengths and inform strategies for better service delivery in the coming year.
