Authorities in Kiambu County have intensified a manhunt for a suspect connected to the rape and subsequent death of a 62-year-old woman in Ruiru. The horrifying attack occurred in the early hours of Tuesday as the victim, a resident of Matangi-ini area, was walking to work at a coffee farm in Ruiru town.
Kiambu County Police Commander Michael Muchiri confirmed that the woman succumbed to her injuries while undergoing treatment at Nairobi Women’s Hospital. She had initially received first aid at Ruiru Prison Hospital following her rescue by police officers responding to a report from members of the public.
The Brutal Attack
The victim, who showed remarkable strength despite her injuries, recounted the incident to law enforcement officers before her passing. At around 4 a.m., she was accosted by an unknown man near Ruiru Bridge. The attacker raped her and inflicted grievous harm, inserting a sharp object into her private parts, which led to severe bleeding.
Passersby discovered the elderly woman lying by the roadside in critical condition and immediately alerted the police. Officers quickly transported her to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment before transferring her to Nairobi Women’s Hospital for specialized care. Tragically, she succumbed to her injuries while receiving treatment.
Police Response and Investigation
The incident has drawn strong condemnation from law enforcement and the community. Kiambu County Police Commander Michael Muchiri described the crime as “horrendous” and assured the public of swift action.
“The government is committed to addressing crimes of femicide with the urgency they deserve. Our officers are pursuing crucial leads and will bring the perpetrator to justice,” Muchiri said during a press briefing.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Homicide Unit is actively investigating the case. Officers have collected critical evidence, including samples from the crime scene, to aid in the apprehension of the suspect.
Ruiru Sub-County Police Commander Alex Shikondi joined Muchiri at the crime scene, urging the public to come forward with any information that could assist in capturing the assailant.
“This incident is shocking and unacceptable. We appeal to anyone with knowledge of the perpetrator or any suspicious activities in the area to report to the nearest police station,” Shikondi stated.
Community Outrage and Fear
The heinous crime has sparked outrage and fear among residents of Ruiru, particularly women who work early morning shifts. Local leaders and activists have called for enhanced security measures, including better lighting on roads and increased police patrols, to prevent such incidents in the future.
“This is not the first case of such nature in our community. We demand action to ensure the safety of all residents, especially vulnerable groups like women and the elderly,” said one resident during a community meeting convened to address the incident.
Call for Public Cooperation
As investigations continue, police have appealed for public cooperation in bringing the suspect to justice. Tips from the public are often crucial in solving crimes, and officers are optimistic that the community will assist in providing valuable leads.
“We rely on the community to stand with us during such difficult times. Justice for this victim will only be achieved if we work together,” Muchiri emphasized.
The tragic death of the elderly woman highlights the persistent dangers faced by vulnerable populations in Kenya. It serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need to address gender-based violence and improve public safety.
Police have assured residents of Ruiru and its environs that every resource will be employed to ensure the suspect is apprehended and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
