Police Officer Arrested After Losing Firearm in Drunken Incident

A police officer, identified as Police Constable Peter Mburu, is under arrest following a distressing incident involving the loss of his firearm, wallet, and mobile phone after a night of heavy drinking. The event occurred along Eastern Bypass in Mihango, Nairobi, and has sparked an ongoing investigation into the circumstances surrounding the loss of the officer’s equipment.

According to a police report obtained today, the incident began on a night out that saw Constable Mburu and his friends frequenting a drinking joint near the National Police College Campus. The group arrived at the venue around 9:30 pm and continued their revelry until the early hours of the morning. By 2:00 am, when the drinking session came to an end, Constable Mburu and his friends went their separate ways.

As Constable Mburu made his way home to his parents’ residence at Green Court in Mihango, he was reportedly approached by two individuals on a boda boda (motorcycle). The encounter quickly escalated into a confrontation. During the struggle, the boda boda riders managed to steal a Ceska pistol loaded with 15 rounds of ammunition, along with a wallet containing a certificate of appointment, several bank cards, and a mobile phone.

Following the robbery, Constable Mburu reported the incident to the nearby police station. In response, officers from Mihango and the DCI Kayole team launched an immediate investigation. They visited the locations where Mburu and his friends had been drinking, as well as the residence of his parents, in an attempt to piece together the events of the night.

The officer’s wife confirmed that Mburu had left the house earlier in the day while armed. Upon his return, Mburu appeared visibly intoxicated, which raised concerns among his colleagues. He was subsequently taken into custody to assist with the investigation.

During questioning, Constable Mburu struggled to provide a coherent account of the events leading up to the incident. He was found with visible injuries, including bruises on his mouth, elbows, and right knee, as well as torn clothing. These injuries, combined with his disheveled appearance, indicated a rough altercation had taken place.

The stolen Ceska pistol, which is a crucial piece of police equipment, remains at large. The ongoing investigation aims to recover the firearm and apprehend the suspects involved in the theft. The loss of such a weapon poses significant security concerns, given its potential misuse in criminal activities.

This incident has raised questions about the conduct of police officers while off duty, particularly in relation to alcohol consumption and the safeguarding of their equipment. It also highlights the need for strict protocols to ensure that officers maintain their responsibilities and are held accountable for their actions both on and off duty.

As the investigation continues, there will be increased scrutiny on Constable Mburu’s conduct and the circumstances of the incident. The police force is expected to review the case thoroughly to address any lapses in duty and to prevent similar occurrences in the future. The recovery of the stolen firearm and the resolution of this case will be critical in restoring public confidence in the police force’s ability to uphold security and order.
