The Chemase Police Post in Nandi County was the target of a violent raid by locals on January 2, 2025, resulting in the destruction of police property and the lynching of a murder suspect in custody. The incident has drawn attention from senior law enforcement officials, including Deputy Inspector General of Police Eliud Lagat and his Administration Police Service counterpart Gilbert Masengeli. On January 5, the two DIGs visited Chemase, meeting with both police officers and the local community to discuss the situation.
During their visit, Lagat and Masengeli emphasized the need for a thorough investigation into the events surrounding the attack, urging local authorities to ensure that justice is served. They also echoed the sentiments of Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja, who has called for police stations to be transformed into centers of excellence in terms of operations and service delivery.
The raid on the Chemase Police Post was carried out by a mob, who not only grabbed the murder suspect from police custody but also set fire to police property, including a Ford Ranger vehicle from Potopoto Police Station. In a positive turn of events, local police at Chepswerta Market managed to recover the stolen National and Kenya Police Service flags, which had been hidden under a tractor’s mudguard. The flags were taken by the mob during the raid and had been missing since the attack.
During their consultative meeting with sub-county police commanders, Lagat and Masengeli stressed the importance of building trust between the police and the local community. They urged commanders to work closely with local leaders to promote peace and ensure the safety and well-being of residents.
The National Police Service (NPS) condemned the raid, warning the public against taking the law into their own hands. NPS spokesperson Dr. Resila Onyango reiterated that such actions only hinder the police’s ability to effectively serve the community. She called on the public to cooperate with law enforcement to enhance security in the region and avoid further violence.
As the investigation into the Chemase attack continues, police are urging the community to work together with authorities to ensure peace and uphold the rule of law.
