Police officers in Lodwar town seized bhang worth Sh50,000 bundled up as fish, intended for transport to Kitale. The interception occurred at one of the bus stations in Lodwar, marking a significant victory in the county’s ongoing battle against drug trafficking. The suspect, however, managed to escape the scene, abandoning the motorcycle used to transport the illegal substances.
Collaborative Efforts to Combat Crime
Turkana County Commissioner Julius Kavita lauded the combined efforts of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and the Turkana County police commander in this operation. According to Kavita, the swift action by the authorities not only disrupted the supply of illegal drugs but also underscored the county’s commitment to tightening security and tackling illegal businesses.
“While the suspect managed to escape, we have launched investigations to track down those involved. We are also taking decisive steps to ensure such activities are completely stamped out,” Kavita remarked during a press briefing. He also highlighted that the seized bhang was cleverly disguised as fish, making it difficult for ordinary inspections to detect. However, with enhanced vigilance, authorities were able to uncover the illicit cargo.
Inspections Intensified at Bus Stations
The Commissioner noted that bus stations and transportation hubs have increasingly become targets for those engaging in illegal trade. To counter this, the authorities have now ramped up security checks and inspections of packages at these stations. “We are fully committed to conducting thorough inspections on all packages and will leave no stone unturned in our fight against illegal trade in Turkana County,” Kavita warned.
He further cautioned those involved in the illegal drug trade, stating, “Their days are numbered. We will ensure that anyone caught smuggling illegal goods into or out of this county faces the full force of the law.”
NYS Uniforms Impersonation Plot Foiled
In a separate but related discovery, police officers also confiscated National Youth Service (NYS) uniforms that were reportedly being used by criminals to impersonate police officers and rob unsuspecting residents. The uniforms were found packed in the same batch of packages seized at the bus station, further intensifying the ongoing investigation into the extent of criminal activities in the region.
Kavita emphasized the danger posed by criminals impersonating police officers, especially in Turkana South, where the uniforms were destined. “Such criminal activities undermine our security efforts and erode public trust in law enforcement. These criminals use uniforms to conduct robberies and extort the community, thus increasing insecurity,” he said.
A Regional Threat
According to Turkana County Police Commander Daniel Kinyua, many of the illegal goods entering Turkana are suspected to come from neighboring countries. He expressed concern about the porous borders in the region, which provide easy entry points for smugglers and other criminal elements. To counter this, Kinyua announced that patrols along Turkana’s borders will be intensified.
“The fact that these goods are entering from neighboring regions makes it a regional problem, and we must be proactive in securing our borders. We are going to conduct more regular patrols and work closely with the national government to ensure that all illicit trade is brought to a halt,” Kinyua stated.
Ongoing Investigations
Both Kavita and Kinyua affirmed that investigations are underway to identify the individuals behind the smuggling of bhang and NYS uniforms. The records on the package, they revealed, indicated the uniforms were intended for criminals operating in Turkana South, raising concerns about the broader security threats faced by residents in that area.
“We are determined to uncover the full extent of this network. We have already gathered significant evidence, and our officers are working tirelessly to bring the perpetrators to justice,” Kinyua assured the public.
A Strong Message to Criminals
As Turkana County grapples with growing challenges related to drug trafficking and criminal impersonation, the successful seizure of bhang and NYS uniforms serves as a strong message to those involved in such activities. Authorities in the region have reiterated their resolve to crack down on illegal businesses and enhance security measures to protect residents.
The collaboration between local police, the DCI, and other security agencies underscores a unified commitment to restoring order and ensuring that the region is safe for its inhabitants. With increased patrols, enhanced inspections, and ongoing investigations, Turkana County is setting a clear precedent that illegal activities will not be tolerated.
