President William Ruto has unveiled plans to invest Ksh. 100 million in a fish landing site in Siaya County, highlighting his administration’s commitment to boosting the region’s fishing economy. The announcement came during the third day of the Piny Luo Cultural Festival, held at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Stadium.
Addressing the gathering, President Ruto emphasized the importance of integrating cultural preservation with economic development. “As we carry forward our traditions and culture, we will build a Ksh. 100 million fish landing site to support the fishing community. Culture is evolving, and we must invest in infrastructure that fosters economic growth,” he stated.
In addition to the fish landing site, the president inaugurated the Ksh. 400 million Ramogi Campus, which is set to admit students starting January 2025. The campus aims to provide quality education and equip youth with skills critical for the region’s development.
President Ruto also gazetted two significant cultural sites in Siaya County: the Ramogi Forest and the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Mausoleum. These sites will play a pivotal role in preserving Kenya’s cultural and historical heritage. He further revealed plans to assess and potentially gazette seven additional sites, including the Cell Blocs on Oyamo Islands and the Owiny Sigoma Heritage Complex.
The festival, themed “Luo Unity in Diversity and in Diaspora,” saw President Ruto, Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, and Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga honored as Luo elders. Raila Odinga expressed gratitude for the leaders’ attendance, highlighting the event’s importance in celebrating the Luo community’s heritage.
Siaya Governor James Orengo welcomed attendees from Kenya, Uganda, South Sudan, and beyond, underscoring the festival’s role in uniting the Luo diaspora. Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga emphasized the event’s significance in fostering reflection and planning for a prosperous future.
The Piny Luo Cultural Festival concludes on January 2, 2025, leaving a legacy of cultural pride and economic promise for the Luo community.
