President William Ruto is set to fulfill his promise to sugarcane farmers by releasing the first-ever bonus payment in Mumias, Kakamega County, on Monday. This historic gesture is part of the government’s commitment to revitalize the sugar industry and ensure fair compensation for farmers.
The President, accompanied by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, reiterated his dedication to improving the livelihoods of sugarcane farmers during his January 1 announcement. At that time, he assured the public that the bonus payments would be ready by the end of January 2025, signaling a new era of accountability and support for the sector.
“As I promised, we will install new management at Mumias Sugar Company. We will ensure that there is a programme that guarantees sugarcane farmers timely payments, timely payments to workers, and a bonus for farmers,’’ President Ruto stated.
The bonus is part of a broader strategy to rejuvenate Mumias Sugar Company through a leasing programme designed to ensure sustainability and profitability. This initiative, aimed at boosting the confidence of farmers and workers, represents a critical step in addressing the challenges that have plagued the sugar industry for years.
President Ruto made the announcement during the Kakamega Governor’s Cup 2024 tournament at the Mumias Sports Complex. The tournament not only showcased the region’s sporting talent but also provided a platform to highlight development efforts in Kakamega County.
Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa expressed gratitude to the President for honoring his commitment. “You were here in January and promised to come back before the end of January. I thank you for responding to come and tour the region for development,’’ Governor Barasa said.
The bonus payment underscores the government’s broader efforts to enhance agricultural productivity and improve the welfare of farmers. By addressing longstanding issues such as delayed payments and mismanagement in the sugar sector, the administration aims to create a stable and reliable market for sugarcane growers.
This milestone marks a significant achievement for the region, promising economic empowerment and renewed hope for families dependent on sugarcane farming. The President’s visit to Mumias reinforces his administration’s commitment to delivering on its promises and fostering development in all parts of the country.
