President William Ruto is set to preside over a historic livestock auction at this year’s Agricultural Society of Kenya (ASK) Kisumu Regional Show, scheduled to take place from July 24-28 at Mamboleo Showground. This marks the first time such an event will be hosted in Kisumu County, adding significant allure to the regional exhibition which has attracted over 120 local and international exhibitors.
According to George Ong’udi, the Chairman of Kisumu ASK, the auction will feature highly improved breeds aimed at enhancing the overall quality of the show. “Having high-quality animals has been a challenge, but this has now been taken care of, and we expect the head of state, President William Ruto, and other high-ranking government officials to grace the auction,” Ong’udi stated.
Preparations for the show have been finalized, with an increased number of exhibitors expected from Uganda and Tanzania alongside diverse sectors including agriculture, manufacturing, housing, SMEs, banking, hospitality, education, and public and private institutions. Key players in the sugar industry such as South Nyanza (SONY), Chemelil, and Kipchimchim will also be present to showcase their latest technologies and products.
The theme of this year’s show, “Promoting Climate-Smart Agriculture and Trade Initiatives for Sustainable Growth,” underscores its focus on innovation and sustainability in agricultural practices. The event will serve as a pivotal platform for sharing knowledge through exhibits, workshops, and training sessions aimed at fostering resilience and improving food security.
Security measures have been heightened to safeguard exhibitors and attendees throughout the event. Ong’udi assured that comprehensive arrangements with county and regional police ensure maximum security, allowing participants to engage freely and safely.
Highlighting additional activities leading up to the main event, Sunday, July 22, has been designated as the Harvest Festival, followed by trade judging on the 23rd. Erick Omondi, Kisumu County Chief Officer for Agriculture, emphasized the significance of the showcased technologies in advancing local farming practices and boosting agricultural productivity in the region.
To encourage widespread participation, Jesca Owedo, Gates and Parking Chairperson, announced affordable entrance fees: Sh250 for adults, Sh200 for children, and varying rates for members and corporates. The accessible pricing aims to attract a diverse audience keen on learning about climate-smart agriculture and contributing to the region’s economic growth.
The ASK Kisumu Regional Show promises to be a landmark event, uniting stakeholders, showcasing innovations, and reinforcing Kenya’s agricultural prowess while advancing sustainable development goals in the Lake Region.
