Public Service Cabinet Secretary (CS) Justin Muturi is facing growing calls to resign following his recent criticism of Kenya’s top security agencies. The latest to join the chorus of voices urging his departure is Gem Member of Parliament Elisha Odhiambo. On Tuesday, Odhiambo publicly called for Muturi to step down, citing his public statements on security matters as problematic for someone holding a position in the Cabinet.
Muturi, a former Attorney General and House Speaker, has increasingly taken a critical stance against government institutions, particularly the National Intelligence Service (NIS), following the tragic deaths of two individuals from Mlolongo. He has demanded the establishment of a commission of inquiry into enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings in the country, pushing for a deeper investigation into the matter to address the growing concerns of human rights violations in Kenya.
While Muturi’s remarks have drawn attention to significant security concerns, Odhiambo and other critics argue that his public statements against government agencies, especially from within the Cabinet, are harmful to the country’s democratic institutions. “Kenya is at a critical moment in its democratic and governance journey. Strong and functional institutions are our best bet for stability and progress,” Odhiambo said, stressing the importance of unity in the face of such challenges. He further criticized the CS for undermining key security agencies, calling his actions “irresponsible” and “dangerous.”
The Gem MP went on to say that the appropriate way to address the issues raised by Muturi would be through more formal channels, rather than airing grievances publicly. “It is outrageous that a senior government official has taken it upon himself to question one of these institutions in government,” Odhiambo added.
Muturi’s remarks, particularly on the NIS, have been met with concern due to the sensitive nature of the agency’s work, which includes protecting the country from internal and external threats. His statements are seen as further polarizing an already tense political climate.
Odhiambo concluded by urging Muturi to resign, emphasizing that the CS must either align with the government’s reform efforts or “take his fight to the opposition benches.” As the debate continues, the pressure on Muturi to make a decision about his future in the Cabinet intensifies, as the country grapples with the broader implications of his outspoken stance.
