PS Kisiang’ani Hails Impact of Bottom-up Economic Agenda, Calls for Support of Affordable Housing

As Kenyans gear up to celebrate Mashujaa Day in Kwale County, State Department for Broadcasting and Telecommunication Principal Secretary (PS) Edward Kisiang’ani has underscored the transformative impact of the Kenya Kwanza government’s Bottom-up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), with affordable housing being a flagship project. The celebration, themed around affordable housing, has highlighted how this initiative is reshaping the economic landscape by creating jobs and providing Kenyans with the opportunity to become homeowners.

Kisiang’ani called upon Kenyans to support the affordable housing project, noting that it has significantly contributed to job creation, particularly in the construction sector, while also advancing homeownership for many families. “Affordable Housing is not just about houses; it’s about jobs across various fields,” said Kisiang’ani. His remarks resonated with the government’s focus on creating an inclusive economy through bottom-up strategies that empower citizens and promote self-reliance.

Affordable Housing as a Pillar of BETA

The affordable housing initiative is part of a larger plan aimed at addressing Kenya’s perennial housing shortage. With the rising demand for affordable homes, this project seeks to provide housing units to lower-income earners while at the same time creating employment opportunities for Kenyans in various industries such as construction, engineering, and real estate. The government has positioned affordable housing as a cornerstone of its Bottom-up Economic Transformation Agenda, which focuses on job creation, economic empowerment, and reducing inequality.

PS Kisiang’ani’s statement reflects the belief that affordable housing serves not only as a solution to housing shortages but also as a vehicle for economic transformation. By providing jobs and fostering homeownership, the project addresses two critical challenges—employment and shelter—thus promoting financial independence and improving the quality of life for many Kenyans.

The Bottom-up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA) emphasizes the empowerment of ordinary citizens. By focusing on bottom-up economics, the government seeks to uplift individuals at the grassroots level, providing them with the tools and opportunities to improve their living standards. Kisiang’ani emphasized this point, urging Kenyans to appreciate the transformative nature of affordable housing beyond the construction of homes. “The media should understand President William Ruto’s philosophy. The Bottom-up Economic Transformation Agenda pillars are about dignity and empowerment, so that no one depends on anyone,” said Kisiang’ani.

Empowerment through Economic Independence

One of the key principles of the bottom-up approach is to empower citizens economically so that they do not have to rely on government assistance. According to Kisiang’ani, the role of the government is to enable citizens to be self-sufficient. “The government has a duty to empower people to be independent and only come to the government when it is necessary,” he added. This statement aligns with the broader goals of the Kenya Kwanza administration, which aims to foster a sense of independence and self-reliance among citizens by offering them opportunities to thrive economically.

The affordable housing project is seen as a tangible example of how this vision can be realized. By facilitating access to affordable homes and creating jobs, the government is helping citizens achieve economic independence. The project also targets non-agricultural productive areas, recognizing the need to diversify economic activities and spread development to regions beyond Kenya’s traditional agricultural hubs.

Mashujaa Day Focus on Affordable Housing

This year’s Mashujaa Day celebration in Kwale County is thematically focused on affordable housing, underscoring the significance of this initiative in Kenya’s socio-economic development. With the government committed to constructing thousands of affordable housing units across the country, the theme serves as a reminder of the critical role that housing plays in enhancing economic security and uplifting the living standards of citizens.

Kisiang’ani’s remarks come at a time when the country is grappling with high unemployment rates, especially among the youth. The affordable housing project, by creating jobs in various sectors, offers a much-needed solution to the unemployment challenge. From construction workers to engineers and suppliers, the project has generated numerous employment opportunities, directly benefiting thousands of Kenyans.

Furthermore, the emphasis on job creation through affordable housing aligns with the bottom-up approach that seeks to create an inclusive economy. By targeting low- and middle-income earners, the project ensures that the benefits of economic growth are distributed more equitably, reducing income inequality and fostering a sense of ownership and empowerment among citizens.

Digital Connectivity and Economic Transformation

Alongside affordable housing, the government’s digital connectivity program also plays a crucial role in its bottom-up agenda. PS John Tanui, who accompanied PS Kisiang’ani during the event in Kwale County, highlighted the strides made in enhancing digital connectivity across the country. Kwale County, in particular, has benefited from the government’s efforts to improve internet access, with more public institutions being connected to fibre-optic networks.

Tanui revealed that 274 digital hubs have been established nationwide, with 20 of these hubs being operational in the coastal region. “We are enhancing fibre connectivity. So far, we have connected 35 public institutions with fibre in Kwale County, and we will do 51 more under the Universal Service Fund (USF),” he said. This initiative aims to connect a total of 236 institutions in the short term, providing them with access to fast and reliable internet services.

The digital connectivity program is part of the government’s broader strategy to bridge the digital divide and promote economic development through technology. By connecting schools, hospitals, and other public institutions to the internet, the government is empowering communities and enabling them to access information, services, and opportunities that were previously out of reach.

The Role of the Media in Supporting BETA

During his address, PS Kisiang’ani called on the media to play a more active role in promoting the achievements of the Bottom-up Economic Transformation Agenda. He urged the media to amplify stories about the milestones achieved under the government’s economic strategy, particularly in areas such as job creation, digital connectivity, and affordable housing.

Kisiang’ani emphasized the need for the media to understand and communicate the philosophy behind BETA, which is centered on promoting dignity and economic empowerment. By highlighting success stories and showcasing the positive impact of government initiatives, the media can contribute to building public confidence in the bottom-up approach and fostering a greater understanding of its goals.

Challenges and the Way Forward

While the affordable housing initiative and digital connectivity program have made significant progress, challenges remain. Access to affordable land, financing for construction, and the high cost of building materials are some of the hurdles that the government must address to ensure the sustainability and scalability of the project. Additionally, ensuring that the benefits of affordable housing are felt across all regions of the country, including rural and marginalized areas, will require sustained commitment and innovative solutions.

The government’s focus on non-agricultural productive areas for affordable housing projects is a step in the right direction. By diversifying economic activities and encouraging development in previously neglected regions, the government can promote balanced growth and ensure that all citizens benefit from the country’s economic progress.

Conclusion

As Kenya prepares to celebrate Mashujaa Day in Kwale County, the focus on affordable housing serves as a timely reminder of the government’s commitment to transforming the economy through the Bottom-up Economic Transformation Agenda. PS Edward Kisiang’ani’s call for Kenyans to support this initiative highlights the importance of affordable housing not only as a solution to the country’s housing deficit but also as a catalyst for job creation and economic empowerment. Through the bottom-up approach, the government aims to foster self-reliance and dignity among its citizens, ensuring that no one is left behind in the country’s journey toward economic transformation.
