Interior Principal Secretary (PS) Raymond Omollo has urged the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) to enhance its focus on human rights in policing. Speaking during the induction of new IPOA commissioners, PS Omollo emphasized the pivotal role IPOA plays in bridging the gap between law enforcement and the public by promoting accountability and transparency.
“As the new members of the IPOA Board, you now carry the profound responsibility of ensuring that policing in Kenya adheres to the highest standards of accountability and respect for human rights and dignity,” he stated. Omollo underscored the importance of IPOA’s mandate in restoring public confidence in the justice system and fostering a culture of fairness in law enforcement.
The five-day induction training aims to equip the new commissioners with the tools and insights necessary to uphold IPOA’s mission of independent oversight of the police. Omollo stressed that the government remains steadfast in supporting IPOA’s human-rights-centered approach, which aligns with Kenya’s broader goals of promoting justice and social cohesion.
In his address, Omollo urged the commissioners to focus on systemic reforms that enhance fairness in law enforcement while addressing the root causes of misconduct and inefficiency within the police service. He highlighted that accountability and respect for human dignity are the foundation of a trustworthy and effective policing system.
Police Deputy Inspector General Gilbert Masengeli also spoke at the event, affirming the police service’s commitment to professionalism and ethical practices. “The police are dedicated to upholding the highest standards of conduct and fostering public trust,” Masengeli noted.
The induction of new IPOA commissioners comes at a time when calls for police reforms and greater accountability in Kenya are intensifying. With their renewed focus on human rights, the new board members are expected to play a critical role in addressing complaints against police misconduct and improving public confidence in law enforcement.
