Azimio leader Raila Odinga has downplayed the stakes surrounding his bid for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairperson seat, stating it is not a life-and-death matter for him. Speaking during the burial of Mzee Richard Oudia in Bondo constituency, Odinga acknowledged the presence of formidable opponents but emphasized his readiness to return to his duties in Kenya if he does not clinch the position.
Despite his tempered approach, the former Prime Minister expressed confidence in his chances, asserting his commitment to serving the African continent if elected. “If the people of Africa see it fit to have me as their chairperson, I will humbly serve. However, if not, I will continue advancing the agenda of our nation back home,” Odinga remarked.
The event also saw Siaya Senator Oburu Oginga criticize human rights activists and some politicians for their perceived selectiveness in addressing abductions and extrajudicial killings. Oburu accused them of remaining silent during the post-election demonstrations in 2022 when Azimio supporters lost their lives.
“Justice must be universal. It is disingenuous to demand accountability for recent abductions while ignoring the pain and loss suffered by our supporters last year,” Oburu said, adding that calls for justice should include compensation for families of those shot by police during the protests.
The senator emphasized that two wrongs do not make a right but argued for consistent standards in the pursuit of justice. He urged leaders to ensure that all victims of political violence are remembered and supported, rather than focusing selectively on current issues.
Odinga’s remarks and Oburu’s criticism highlight the ongoing debate in Kenya regarding accountability, justice, and fairness. As Odinga eyes the continental role, his statements reflect a broader vision, yet his family and supporters continue to push for justice on domestic matters.
The AUC chairperson race remains a significant milestone for Odinga’s political journey, even as he signals his willingness to embrace any outcome. Meanwhile, the demand for equitable justice remains a resonant call among his allies.
