Kenya’s candidate for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairperson seat, Raila Odinga, has shared the key outcomes of his discussions with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi. Raila, who is accompanying President William Ruto on a State visit to Egypt, is on a significant diplomatic mission to garner support for his bid ahead of the highly-anticipated election on February 25, 2025.
During their meeting, Raila emphasized the historical importance of Egypt in advancing Pan-African ideals, notably those championed by former President Gamal Abdel Nasser. Raila highlighted President Nasser’s vision of political unity, economic independence, and regional integration as the cornerstone of a self-sufficient and resilient Africa. He noted that these principles closely align with his own vision for the African Union Commission, underlining his commitment to promoting peace, development, and prosperity across the continent.
Raila’s campaign, which is built around a strong Pan-African ethos, seeks to strengthen Africa’s position in global affairs, focusing on economic integration and social development. The talks also delved into enhancing bilateral relations between Kenya and Egypt, particularly in areas such as trade partnerships and continental leadership aspirations. The leaders discussed strategies for advancing manufacturing and economic development, areas in which Egypt has made notable strides.
One of the highlights of Raila’s visit was a tour of the Arab Organisation for Industrialisation, a prominent defense and civilian manufacturing complex in Egypt. Raila was impressed by the organisation’s ability to produce goods that meet international standards while generating sustainable employment, offering a model for other African nations to emulate. “Egypt’s growth in manufacturing, agriculture, and tourism positions it as a beacon for economic development across the continent,” he said.
The discussions also touched on improving peace and security across Africa, with a particular focus on the African Open Skies policy. Another key topic was regional economic integration, with an emphasis on the role of Regional Economic Communities (RECs) in fostering deeper collaboration across the continent. Raila underscored the importance of the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank), headquartered in Egypt, in facilitating Africa’s economic integration and advancing the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
With his focus on intra-Africa trade, Raila’s visit to Egypt underscores his commitment to strengthening Africa’s economic cohesion, offering a clear vision for advancing the continent’s development agenda through strategic partnerships and enhanced regional cooperation.
