Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga on Friday graced the 20th Graduation Ceremony of Kabarak University, marking a historic moment for the institution as it celebrated its highest number of graduates since its establishment in 2002.
Odinga was warmly received by the university’s Chancellor, Gideon Moi, and former Rongai MP, Raymond Moi. The ceremony, held at the scenic Graduation Square in Nakuru County, honored 2,541 graduands, a milestone for the private institution founded by the late President Daniel Toroitich Arap Moi.
Located 20 kilometers from Nakuru town, Kabarak University has grown into a beacon of academic excellence and innovation in Kenya, making the ceremony a momentous occasion for the students, faculty, and guests alike.
Odinga’s Continental Campaign
Odinga’s appearance at the graduation comes amid his rigorous campaign to secure the chairmanship of the African Union Commission (AUC). Fresh from a diplomatic mission, Raila returned to the country after a series of high-profile engagements across Africa to drum up support for his candidacy.
Earlier this week, Odinga was in the Central African Republic, where he met President Faustin-Archange Touadéra in Bangui. The two leaders discussed Odinga’s vision for Africa, focusing on continental unity, economic development, and good governance.
Expressing his gratitude on X (formerly Twitter), Odinga thanked President Touadéra for the warm reception, noting the critical role Central Africa plays in shaping Africa’s future.
Odinga’s campaign also took him to Djibouti, the home country of his main rival, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf. In Djibouti, he held a strategic meeting with President Ismail Omar Guelleh, underscoring Kenya’s commitment to rallying support for its candidate amid stiff competition.
Intensifying the Campaign Trail
Odinga’s itinerary reflects the intensity of his campaign. December has seen him traverse Eritrea, Chad, and the Central African Republic, engaging with key stakeholders to consolidate support.
In November, Raila focused on Francophone West Africa, visiting countries like Senegal, Côte d’Ivoire, and Mali to present his case to French-speaking nations. His approach has been inclusive, aiming to build consensus among diverse African regions.
Next on Odinga’s agenda is the Maghreb region, comprising Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, and Mauritania. This strategic region in North Africa holds significant sway in the AUC elections, and Raila’s visit is expected to be pivotal in shaping his campaign’s momentum.
Televised Debate in Ethiopia
A highlight of Odinga’s campaign was his participation in the “Mjadala,” a public debate for all AUC candidates held in Ethiopia on December 13. The televised debate, broadcast live across Africa, provided candidates an opportunity to articulate their visions and priorities for the continent.
Odinga’s performance during the debate showcased his wealth of experience and understanding of Africa’s challenges and opportunities. From addressing regional conflicts to fostering economic integration, Odinga emphasized a bold and visionary leadership approach that resonated with many viewers.
Balancing Local and Continental Duties
Despite his busy continental campaign, Odinga’s presence at Kabarak University’s graduation underscores his enduring commitment to domestic engagements. As a statesman, Odinga continues to champion Kenya’s aspirations on both local and international fronts.
Kenya is keen to secure the AUC chairmanship, a position that would amplify the country’s influence in shaping Africa’s future. With strong opposition from Mahmoud Ali Youssouf and other contenders, Odinga’s campaign reflects both determination and strategic diplomacy.
As the year comes to a close, Odinga has vowed not to take a Christmas break, demonstrating his relentless drive to secure the coveted position. His campaign is set to continue into 2024, with the polls scheduled for early next year.
Odinga’s dual focus on local engagements like Kabarak’s graduation and his continental ambitions highlights his multifaceted role as a leader committed to fostering progress and unity across Africa.
