Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga convened a high-level meeting with Western Kenya leaders on Tuesday to address divisions and rally support ahead of the party’s grassroots elections scheduled for November 27, 2024. The dinner meeting, held at a Nairobi hotel, was attended by elected officials from the region, including Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa, Busia Governor Paul Otuoma, and several Members of Parliament.
Odinga emphasized the need for unity and peaceful elections, urging leaders to focus on consolidating the party’s strength in Western Kenya. He cautioned against actions that could deepen divisions among their supporters, stressing that unity was vital for the party’s success in the upcoming elections and beyond.
“The elections should be peaceful,” Odinga stated. “We must work together to ensure ODM remains strong and influential in this region and nationally.”
Rising Tensions in Migori County
Despite Odinga’s unity call, tensions have been reported in Migori County, where divisions among some elected leaders threaten to disrupt the party’s election process. Nyatike MP Tom Mboya Odege recently criticized local ODM officials for poor communication, which led to the absence of key figures, including himself, from a recent delegates’ meeting organized by Migori Governor Ochilo Ayacko.
Odege expressed frustration over the lack of cooperation among the county’s leaders, warning that such discord undermines the party’s cohesion. His remarks highlighted an underlying challenge within ODM—fostering collaboration among its leaders at both grassroots and national levels.
The meeting, however, was hailed as a success by the party leadership. Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o, who currently serves as ODM’s interim leader, and Gladys Wanga, the party’s national chairperson, presided over the event.

Addressing the gathering, Wanga downplayed concerns over visible divisions within the party, instead urging members to focus on increasing membership during the upcoming voter registration drive. She underscored the importance of ODM’s numerical strength, noting that it would be a decisive factor in the 2027 general elections.
“We must look forward with a focus on growth,” Wanga said. “Our strength lies in our members, and a robust registration drive will ensure we remain a formidable force.”
Wanga reaffirmed the party’s commitment to securing victory, whether as a standalone political entity or as part of a coalition.
Governor Ayacko and Kuria West MP Mathias Robby echoed these sentiments, emphasizing ODM’s critical role in shaping Kenya’s political landscape. Ayacko noted that the party’s influence remains unmatched, stating that no government can be formed without ODM’s backing.
“ODM has always played a pivotal role in national politics,” Ayacko remarked. “Despite our losses in recent presidential elections, our impact is undeniable, and we must maintain this momentum.”

As the November 27 grassroots elections approach, ODM leaders have assured members of a transparent process. Wanga reiterated the need for peace during the electoral period, urging members to embrace unity and avoid unnecessary disputes.
“The upcoming elections are an opportunity to showcase our party’s commitment to democracy,” she said. “We must ensure the process is free, fair, and peaceful.”
The leaders also called for renewed energy in strengthening the party’s structures and mobilizing members. They emphasized that unity within the party ranks would be crucial in navigating the electoral challenges ahead and securing ODM’s position as a key player in Kenya’s political future.
