Athletics Kenya Unveils Star-Studded 10,000m Team for Paris 2024 Olympics

Athletics Kenya has officially announced the formidable 10,000m team set to represent the nation at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, featuring an impressive lineup headlined by two-time World Cross Country Champion Beatrice Chebet and Ras Al Khaimah Half Marathon champion Daniel Mateiko.

Beatrice Chebet has secured her spot on the Olympic team in spectacular fashion. At the Prefontaine Classic, the Diamond League Meeting held in Eugene, Chebet delivered a breathtaking performance, clocking a world record time of 28:54.14 in the 10,000m race. This stunning achievement saw her finish ahead of Ethiopian star Gudaf Tsegay, who set a personal best. Chebet’s record-breaking run not only earned her the win but also solidified her position as a top contender for Olympic gold in Paris.

Joining Chebet on the women’s team is Lilian Kasait, the World Cross Country silver medallist, who secured her Olympic spot with a strong second-place finish among the Kenyans at the same event. Margaret Chelimo, the World Cross Country bronze medallist, completes the trio of female athletes, rounding out a powerhouse team that promises to be a major force in Paris.

On the men’s side, Daniel Mateiko’s prowess was evident as he secured his place on the team with a dominant performance in the 10,000m race at the Prefontaine Classic. Mateiko, known for his strength and endurance, will be a key athlete to watch in Paris.

Nicholas Kimeli, who also performed admirably in Eugene, joins Mateiko on the men’s team. However, the selection of the third athlete was not without drama. Daniel Simiu, a favourite for a medal, stumbled and missed out on a podium finish, leaving room for Bernard Kibet to step up. Kibet’s strong third-place finish at the event earned him the final spot on the team, adding depth and competitiveness to Kenya’s Olympic 10,000m squad.

As Kenya’s 10,000m team prepares for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, expectations are high. The combination of experienced champions and rising stars promises a thrilling showcase of talent and determination. Athletics Kenya’s selection process, which utilized the prestigious Prefontaine Classic as a trial event, has ensured that only the best athletes will represent the nation on the world stage.
