Camtel Marks 25th Anniversary with Parliamentarians’ Day, Advocates for Enhanced Digital Legislation

Cameroon’s national telecom operator, Camtel, hosted a Parliamentarians’ Day at the Mont Febe Hotel. Under the theme “Digital legislation for the structural transformation of the Cameroonian economy,” the event gathered key stakeholders, including lawmakers, to discuss pivotal issues impacting the country’s digital landscape.

Camtel’s CEO, Judith Yah Sunday épse Achidi, opened the discussions by underscoring the pressing need for robust digital laws tailored to the technological advancements and needs of modern society. She emphasized that “clear legislation, adapted to the technological realities and needs of our constantly evolving society,” is essential for fostering a conducive environment for digital growth.

The Parliamentarians’ Day served as a platform to address several critical areas hindering Cameroon’s digital development. Key topics included personal data protection, the prevention of cybercrime, and the deployment of digital infrastructure. These discussions are particularly relevant as Cameroon continues to navigate the complexities of a rapidly evolving digital economy.

A significant portion of the dialogue was dedicated to the challenges of safeguarding telecommunications infrastructure. Camtel highlighted the increasing incidents of vandalism and sabotage, stressing the importance of these national assets. The telecom operator called for stronger measures and urged collaboration with public authorities to establish a more robust security system.

The event culminated in a series of strategic recommendations aimed at enhancing Cameroon’s digital framework. Among these were calls for the government and parliamentarians to:

  1. Strengthen Legislation: Develop and implement laws that address the current and future challenges of the digital economy.
  2. Enhance Security: Bolster measures to protect telecommunications infrastructure from vandalism and sabotage.
  3. Promote Collaboration: Foster partnerships between Camtel, public authorities, and other stakeholders to ensure a secure and efficient digital environment.
  4. Improve Infrastructure: Invest in the deployment and maintenance of digital infrastructure to support the country’s economic transformation.

This Parliamentarians’ Day marked a significant step towards aligning Cameroon’s legislative framework with its digital ambitions. As Camtel continues to spearhead efforts in advancing the nation’s digital infrastructure, the collaboration between lawmakers and the telecom sector will be crucial in driving Cameroon’s digital transformation.
