“Sh800,000 Stolen in Kajiado: Businessman Duped by Impostors in Traffic Police Uniforms”

Three recent incidents highlight the growing audacity of criminals targeting individuals withdrawing large sums of money. These cases underscore the urgent need for enhanced security measures and vigilance, as well as a coordinated response from law enforcement agencies.

Kajiado Bank Robbery: An Unsettling Incident

On August 20, a businessman in Kitengela, Kajiado, fell victim to a brazen robbery shortly after withdrawing Sh800,000 from a local bank. The victim’s ordeal began when he left the bank and entered his Subaru Forester. As he arrived at the second gate of a business park, he was blocked by a Toyota Fielder, whose occupants, dressed in traffic police uniforms, flagged him down. Initially appearing as if it were a routine traffic stop, the situation quickly escalated when four additional men, dressed in civilian clothes, joined the scene.

The attackers, who were later identified as a gang posing as police officers, forcibly removed the businessman from his vehicle. Despite his resistance, they handcuffed him and proceeded to ransack his car. In a shocking display of criminality, they robbed him of the Sh800,000 before fleeing in the direction of Machakos. The victim was left handcuffed until police arrived to assist him. Despite their swift response, no arrests or recovery of the stolen funds have been reported as the investigation continues.

Kerugoya Robbery: A Harrowing Encounter

The wave of bank robberies continued on August 21, when a businesswoman in Kerugoya, Kirinyaga, was targeted shortly after withdrawing Sh500,000. The woman had withdrawn the cash for personal use and was en route home when she was approached by an unknown individual. The assailant, armed with a small gun, confronted her as she stopped to check on the source of a call. In a swift and terrifying act, the gunman snatched her handbag, which contained not only the cash but also identification cards, home keys, a piece of lesso, ATM cards, spectacles, and a mobile phone.

The perpetrator then escaped in a waiting vehicle, which sped off towards Karatina town. Despite the woman’s attempts to raise an alarm, no immediate help arrived, and a subsequent police search yielded no results. This incident underscores the increasing boldness of criminals who are willing to resort to violence to achieve their goals.

Syokimau Heist: A Planned Operation

Earlier in August, on the 1st, another businessman faced a similar fate in Syokimau. After withdrawing Sh1.7 million from the bank, he drove to his apartment, where he parked his vehicle. Unbeknownst to him, a gang had been tracking his movements for nearly five kilometers. The criminals broke into his car, where the money was stored in the boot, and stole it.

The gang’s elaborate plan included infiltrating the apartment complex, where they pretended to be engaged in other activities while their accomplices accessed the vehicle. The entire episode was captured on security cameras, revealing a well-orchestrated crime that began at the bank and concluded with a meticulously executed robbery. The suspects had even been spotted in the bank’s CCTV footage, queuing for service before the heist.

Call for Enhanced Security Measures

These incidents reflect a disturbing pattern of sophisticated and aggressive bank robberies in Kenya. The common elements—armed attacks, impersonation of authority figures, and well-planned operations—point to a growing network of criminals who are increasingly confident and well-prepared.

In response to these alarming developments, it is imperative for law enforcement agencies to intensify their efforts to apprehend the perpetrators and recover the stolen assets. Increased collaboration between banks and security agencies, as well as the adoption of advanced surveillance and security measures, are essential to mitigate the risks and prevent future occurrences.

As the investigations into these cases continue, it is crucial for individuals to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the authorities promptly. The rise in such crimes serves as a stark reminder of the need for heightened security and community cooperation to combat the escalating threat of bank robberies.
