Kalekwa Confident Matano Can Lead Sofapaka FC Back to Glory

Sofapaka FC’s club president, Elly Kalekwa, is optimistic about the club’s prospects for the upcoming FKF Premier League season, particularly with the return of Robert Matano as head coach. Matano, a celebrated figure in Kenyan football, is expected to bring the winning formula that secured Sofapaka’s first Premier League title in 2009.

Matano’s coaching credentials are remarkable, especially his achievement in 2009 when he led Sofapaka to their maiden Premier League title on his first attempt. This accomplishment remains a significant milestone in Kenyan football history, as he remains the only tactician to win the league title in his debut season. His tenure at Sofapaka was marked by a swift promotion from the National Super League (NSL) to the top tier and an immediate triumph in the Premier League.

Since that historic season, however, Sofapaka has struggled to replicate their success, failing to clinch the league title again. Kalekwa is confident that Matano’s return can rekindle the club’s winning spirit. “When I have a teacher who has experience and one who has formed his own team without interference, as you know, a man who hates defeat, I’m confident,” Kalekwa stated. He believes Matano’s past success with the team can be mirrored in the upcoming season. “What he did in 2009 with this team can be replicated, I believe so. There is a lot of hope going to next season; we are thinking of the title, yes, no doubt about that,” Kalekwa added.

Kalekwa emphasized Matano’s extensive experience and historical success with Sofapaka as key reasons for his reappointment. Matano’s previous stint with Sofapaka not only included winning the league but also consistently achieving high finishes, including a remarkable record of never finishing below fourth place until 2016. This track record makes Matano an ideal candidate to lead the team back to the top.

Despite these high hopes, Sofapaka has faced several challenges in recent years. Last season, the team narrowly avoided relegation, finishing 16th in the 18-team league. The club’s struggles were compounded by financial difficulties, including operating without a shirt sponsor. This lack of sponsorship has made it difficult for the club to compete at the highest level and invest in necessary resources.

Kalekwa is optimistic that securing a new sponsor will provide the financial stability needed to support the team’s ambitions. “We have been operating without a shirt sponsor, which has been so tough for us. But we are hoping to land a sponsor which will help us for sure to return to where we belong among the top cream teams up there,” he said.

As Sofapaka prepares for the new season, the return of Robert Matano represents a significant opportunity for revival. His previous success with the club and his vast experience are expected to play a crucial role in guiding the team back to prominence. With renewed hope and potential financial backing, Sofapaka aims to restore its former glory and challenge for the FKF Premier League title once again.

The journey back to the top won’t be easy, but with the combined efforts of Matano’s leadership and strategic support, Sofapaka FC could very well be on the path to reclaiming their place among Kenya’s football elite.
