Singapore Airlines Offers Compensation to Passengers After Turbulent Flight

Singapore Airlines has extended compensation offers to passengers affected by severe turbulence on a flight from London last month. The incident, which led to one fatality and numerous injuries, prompted the airline to provide financial assistance to those impacted by the traumatic experience.

Passengers requiring long-term medical care due to injuries sustained during the May 21 turbulence have been offered an initial payment of $25,000 each. Additionally, those with minor injuries have been offered $10,000 in compensation. The airline announced these offers via social media on June 10, aiming to address the immediate needs of affected passengers.

However, a law firm representing some passengers has advised seeking legal counsel before accepting any compensation from Singapore Airlines. Peter Carter, director of Carter Capner Law, suggested that the incident could have been prevented, placing some responsibility on the airline. Singapore Airlines responded, stating its full cooperation with authorities in investigating the incident but refrained from commenting on legal opinions.

The airline reiterated its commitment to supporting affected passengers, emphasizing its provision of immediate financial assistance and a full refund of airfares to all passengers, regardless of injury. The turbulent flight, which experienced sudden and extreme turbulence over Myanmar, resulted in one fatality and numerous injuries, including severe spinal and brain injuries. Investigations into the incident are ongoing, with initial reports suggesting uncommanded increases in altitude and airspeed during the turbulence.
