Newcastle United’s proposal featured a straight swap: 23-year-old forward Anthony Gordon would join Liverpool, while 21-year-old centre-back Jarell Quansah would head to St James’ Park. Despite Liverpool’s admiration for Gordon, who has shown considerable promise since his move to Newcastle in January 2023 for £45 million, the deal did not align with Liverpool’s plans.
Gordon has had a significant impact at Newcastle. With 11 league goals in the 2023-24 season, he not only demonstrated his scoring prowess but also earned the club’s Player of the Season award. His performances have caught the eye of top clubs, including Paris Saint-Germain, and he is currently with the England squad at Euro 2024. However, his tournament involvement has been limited to a late substitute appearance in the goalless draw against Slovenia.
On the other hand, Liverpool is keen to retain Jarell Quansah, a centre-back who has become a regular feature in their first team. Quansah’s impressive performances last season earned him a spot in the preliminary England squad for Euro 2024, although he did not make the final 26-man roster. His potential and importance to Liverpool’s defensive setup were key factors in the club’s decision to reject the swap deal.
Another crucial reason behind Liverpool’s decision is their current depth in forward positions. The Reds are well-stocked with attacking talents, including Mohamed Salah, Darwin Nunez, Luis Diaz, Cody Gakpo, and Diogo Jota.
