Oguso Confident Police Bullets Will Triumph Over CBE and Advance to CECAFA Women’s Champions League Semis

Kenya Police Bullets’ Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Chris Oguso Mbwanga, has expressed unwavering confidence in his team’s ability to secure a victory against Commercial Bank of Ethiopia (CBE) and advance to the semi-finals of the CECAFA Women’s Champions League Qualifiers. The regional tournament, currently underway in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, has already seen dramatic performances and high stakes, setting the stage for an electrifying final group match on Thursday.

The Police Bullets made history with their first-ever victory in this prestigious competition, achieving a narrow 1-0 win over the Rwandese giants Rayon Sports Women. The decisive moment came courtesy of Puren Alukwe, who scored in the seventh minute, securing three vital points for her team. This victory not only marked a significant milestone for the team but also elevated their prospects in the tournament.

Before this triumph, Beldine Odemba’s charges had played to a goalless draw against South Sudan’s Yei Joint Stars in their opening match on August 17, 2024. The result provided a solid foundation for the team as they prepared for their final group encounter against the hosts, CBE. With one win and one draw, the Police Bullets are in a favorable position, needing either a win or a draw to guarantee their spot in the semi-finals.

In an exclusive interview with Citizen Digital, Oguso praised his team’s performance and highlighted their growing confidence. “I congratulate my girls for harvesting their first win in the tournament. The win means that they have gained confidence having pulled a draw in their first match on Saturday against Yei Joint Stars. Going into the final pool match against CBE, I have no doubt that they will emerge victorious,” he stated.

Oguso’s optimism is rooted in his belief that CBE will face added pressure as the host team. He remarked, “CBE will be under pressure compared to my girls considering that they will be playing at their home turf and that gives me hope of dismantling them.” This perspective underscores Oguso’s strategic approach, as he sees the home advantage as both a challenge and an opportunity for his team.

The Commercial Bank of Ethiopia (CBE) has been a formidable force in Group ‘A,’ securing their semi-final berth with impressive performances. The Ethiopians thrashed Yei Joint Stars 4-0 in their second group match, following a 3-2 victory over Rayon Sports Women. CBE’s strong showing in these matches has set a high bar, but Oguso remains confident that his team can rise to the occasion.

Looking ahead, Oguso is not only focused on the immediate challenge but also on potential future encounters. He expressed enthusiasm about the prospect of facing the Tanzanian giants, Simba Queens, in the semi-finals. “If we win on Thursday, then there is a big possibility of meeting Tanzania giants Simba Queens, a squad which consists of many Kenyans like Corazon Aquino, Ruth Ingotsi, Wicate Kaari, Jentrix Shikangwa, and keeper Carolyne Rufa. This will also play to our advantage,” he added.

The anticipation for Thursday’s clash is palpable, as it will determine which team secures a spot in the semi-finals and continues their quest for regional glory. The match promises to be a thrilling conclusion to Group ‘A,’ with the Police Bullets eager to cement their place among the tournament’s elite.

As the final group stage match approaches, Oguso’s confidence and strategic insight will be crucial in guiding the Police Bullets towards their goal. With a blend of determination, strategic thinking, and the spirit of competition, the team stands on the brink of making history once again in the CECAFA Women’s Champions League Qualifiers.
