Several People Shot Outside Parliament in Anti-Finance Bill Protests

Several individuals have been shot outside the Parliament in Nairobi amidst escalating protests against the Finance Bill 2024. The situation took a violent turn when demonstrators clashed with anti-riot police officers as they attempted to march towards the parliamentary building, where lawmakers were voting on the controversial bill.

The protests, which have been building momentum over the past week, culminated today in a large-scale demonstration. Thousands of citizens gathered in the streets of Nairobi to voice their opposition to the Finance Bill 2024, which critics argue will place undue financial burdens on the populace through increased taxes and stringent economic measures.

The confrontation began peacefully but quickly escalated as the crowd approached the parliamentary precinct. According to eyewitnesses, the protesters were chanting slogans and waving banners when they encountered a heavy police presence. The situation deteriorated rapidly when the demonstrators attempted to breach the barricades set up by the police.

In response to the growing unrest, anti-riot officers deployed tear gas and water cannons in an attempt to disperse the crowd. However, the protesters remained undeterred, leading to a fierce clash between the two sides.

As the tension reached a boiling point, police were compelled to open fire. Multiple gunshots were heard, causing panic and chaos among the demonstrators. Reports indicate that several people were injured in the melee, though the exact number of casualties remains unclear at this time.

Emergency services were quickly deployed to the scene, and the injured were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment. The identities and conditions of those shot have not yet been disclosed.

In a brief statement, the police defended their actions, stating that they were forced to use live ammunition as a last resort to prevent the protesters from storming the parliamentary building and ensuring the safety of the lawmakers and other personnel inside.

The government has yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident. However, sources indicate that an emergency meeting is being convened to address the escalating situation.

The shooting has sparked widespread outrage, with many calling for an immediate investigation into the use of force by the police. Human rights organizations have condemned the incident, demanding accountability and justice for the victims.

Opposition leaders have seized upon the incident to criticize the government’s handling of the protests and the Finance Bill 2024. They argue that the violent crackdown is indicative of a broader trend of suppressing dissent and stifling democratic expression.
