What Ruto Must Do to Keep Angry and Hungry Gen Z Out of the Streets

William Ruto’s presidency, only 20 months old, has already faced a significant trial. Young Kenyans, disillusioned and frustrated, have taken to the streets, and their message is clear: they demand change. The recent protests, which resulted in over 20 deaths and an invasion of Parliament, have left the nation reeling. In response, President Ruto conceded in a televised address, announcing that he would not sign the contentious Finance Bill 2024/25. This move, though a step towards pacifying the unrest, is just the beginning. To truly address the grievances of Kenya’s Generation Z, Ruto must take decisive and transformative actions.

The anger and hunger driving young Kenyans to the streets stem from multiple sources. High unemployment rates, escalating living costs, and limited opportunities for economic advancement have created a powder keg of frustration. The Finance Bill 2024/25, perceived as another burden on already strained finances, was the spark that ignited the recent protests.

Gen Z in Kenya, like their counterparts globally, are digitally savvy, well-informed, and highly connected. They are acutely aware of the socio-economic disparities and are vocal about their demands for a better future. Ruto’s administration must recognize that superficial measures will no longer suffice; structural reforms are essential.

  1. Revised Economic Policies: The immediate withdrawal of the Finance Bill 2024/25 was a necessary first step. However, Ruto’s government must now propose an alternative plan that addresses the economic concerns of the youth. This plan should focus on job creation, support for small and medium enterprises, and investment in emerging industries such as technology and green energy.
  2. Youth Engagement Platforms: Establishing open channels of communication between the government and young citizens is crucial. Platforms for dialogue, whether through town hall meetings, social media interactions, or dedicated youth councils, will help bridge the gap between policymakers and the youth. This engagement should be genuine, with tangible follow-up actions on the issues raised.
  3. Education and Skill Development: Investing in education and vocational training is paramount. Programs that equip young people with skills relevant to the job market can reduce unemployment and underemployment. Partnerships with the private sector to offer internships, apprenticeships, and job placements will also be beneficial.
  4. Economic Diversification: Kenya’s economy needs diversification to reduce its vulnerability to global economic shocks. Promoting sectors such as manufacturing, tourism, and agriculture can create more jobs and drive sustainable growth. Special attention should be given to encouraging entrepreneurship among young people, with incentives for startups and innovation hubs.
  5. Social Safety Nets: Strengthening social safety nets will help alleviate the immediate economic pressures faced by many young Kenyans. Programs that provide support for healthcare, housing, and food security are essential. Ensuring these programs are accessible and free from corruption will build trust and stability.
  6. Good Governance and Accountability: The recent protests highlighted a deep mistrust in government institutions. Ruto’s administration must prioritize transparency, accountability, and the fight against corruption. Implementing robust measures to track and report government spending, as well as holding officials accountable for misconduct, will help restore confidence.
  7. Inclusive Policy-Making: Policies must be inclusive and consider the diverse needs of the population. This includes addressing gender disparities, supporting marginalized communities, and ensuring that all regions of the country benefit from development initiatives. Inclusive policies foster a sense of belonging and reduce the feeling of neglect among the youth.

President William Ruto’s acknowledgment of the protesters’ concerns is a step in the right direction, but it is merely the beginning. To keep angry and hungry Gen Z out of the streets, his administration must embark on a path of genuine reform and inclusive growth. By addressing the root causes of discontent and implementing sustainable policies, Ruto has the opportunity to transform the challenges of today into the foundations of a brighter future for Kenya.

The journey will not be easy, but with commitment, transparency, and a focus on the welfare of all citizens, Ruto can lead Kenya towards a more prosperous and equitable society. The youth, with their energy, creativity, and resilience, can be powerful allies in this endeavor if their voices are heard and their needs are met.
