Limping Mwamba Seek Redemption at Kabeberi 7s

As the Kabeberi 7s kicks off this weekend at the RFUEA Grounds in Nairobi, Mwamba RFC, currently struggling in the National Sevens Circuit, is looking for a much-needed turnaround. Hosting the fourth leg of the series, Mwamba hopes to reverse their dismal performance so far this season.

Head coach Joseph Baabu has been candid about the team’s challenges, attributing their poor form to a late start in pre-season training caused by a lack of a training ground. “We basically started this season on a low because of two major factors; we didn’t start the pre-season as planned due to not having a training ground. We were a bit disadvantaged because of that,” Baabu explained. However, the partnership with Upper Hill Secondary School has provided some relief, allowing Mwamba to prepare more effectively.

Despite the new arrangement, Mwamba’s preparation was hampered, as they only trained for one week before Christie 7s. “Anyone who understands rugby will tell you that you can’t train for just one week and expect maximum or positive results, especially in 7s,” Baabu added. This lack of preparation was evident in their performances at Christie 7s, Ingo 7s, and most recently, Dala 7s.

The absence of key first-team players early in the season further compounded Mwamba’s woes. “We started Christie 7s with mostly second-team players due to the unavailability of our first team,” Baabu noted. The situation has gradually improved, with the return of experienced players like Brian Mutugi at Dala 7s and Tony Omondi now preparing for the Kabeberi 7s. “Tony is part of the squad now, and we hope we won’t face more injuries,” Baabu expressed.

As they gear up for this weekend’s tournament, the Kulabus, as Mwamba is affectionately known, are targeting a spot in the main cup quarter-finals or semi-finals. Achieving this would not only boost their confidence but also secure their place in Division One for the upcoming Driftwood 7s.

Mwamba’s pool for the Kabeberi 7s is notably challenging. They find themselves in Pool D alongside defending champions KCB, MMUST RFC, and MKU Thika. This tough draw underscores the uphill battle they face, but Baabu remains hopeful. “Tomorrow (Saturday), we need to play against MMUST, MKU Thika, and KCB. We need to win two of these matches to secure our place for Driftwood as we await Mombasa’s invitation. Mombasa could not travel for the Kabeberi 7s due to various post-COVID sponsorship issues, and this reflects the broader struggles within the sport,” Baabu elaborated.

The financial strain on teams is evident, as Baabu highlighted the impact of reduced sponsorships on tournament operations. “I spoke with one of the Kisumu RFC guys, and they chose not to stream Dala 7s to save funds for the Kenya Cup, which is approaching. It’s a tough decision, as not streaming a tournament means cutting costs that could otherwise support the Kenya Cup campaign.”

Mwamba’s performance at Kabeberi 7s will be crucial not only for their season but also for their broader ambitions. Their group stage fixtures are pivotal, and a strong showing could rejuvenate their campaign and secure a positive finish. As they battle through Pool D, their resolve and adaptability will be tested, but the prospect of redemption and improved results remains a driving force for the team.
