Safaricom Leads 5G Expansion in Kenya, Outpacing Airtel

Safaricom has made significant strides in expanding its 5G network, surpassing its competitor Airtel Kenya in both the number of sites and geographical coverage.

Since the activation of its 5G services in March 2021 and subsequent launch in October 2022, Safaricom has been on a rapid expansion trajectory. As of the latest reports, Safaricom has activated an additional 598 new 5G sites in the past year alone, slightly exceeding its target of 595 sites. This brings Safaricom’s total number of 5G sites to 1,700, solidifying its position as the leader in 5G deployment in Kenya.

A key highlight of Safaricom’s expansion efforts is its increased coverage footprint. Initially serving 23 counties in 2023, Safaricom has now extended its 5G services to an impressive 43 out of Kenya’s 47 counties. This expansion not only enhances connectivity in urban centers but also reaches more rural areas, contributing to bridging the digital divide across the country.

In contrast, Airtel Kenya, while also expanding its 5G network, added 320 new sites during the same period. This brings Airtel’s total number of 5G sites to 513, with coverage extended to 39 counties. Despite falling short of its target to add 100 more sites, Airtel has significantly increased its presence, particularly in key urban areas.

The expansion of 5G networks by both Safaricom and Airtel is part of a broader strategy to enhance internet speeds, reliability, and connectivity for consumers and businesses alike. With 5G technology promising faster download speeds, lower latency, and support for emerging technologies like Internet of Things (IoT) and AI-driven applications, the race to expand coverage is crucial for gaining market share and meeting consumer demand.

Looking ahead, Safaricom remains committed to further enhancing its 5G network capabilities, with plans to continue expanding its coverage and services. This includes leveraging partnerships, investing in infrastructure, and exploring innovative applications of 5G technology across various sectors.
