A Louisiana man, Daniel Callihan, 36, was arrested in connection with the murder of a woman and her young daughter. The Jackson Police Department announced that they believe Callihan had an accomplice, 32-year-old Victoria Cox, who was also arrested.
Callihan was detained Thursday after the discovery of a 35-year-old mother, Callie Brunett, found dead and her two abducted daughters located in Mississippi. One daughter, aged 4, was found deceased, and the other, aged 6, was found injured. Authorities suspect the case may involve human trafficking.
Callihan faces accusations of committing “brutal and heinous acts of violence,” including the killings of Callie Brunett and her 4-year-old daughter, stated the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office, north of New Orleans.
When asked by a reporter why he allegedly killed the child, Callihan responded, “I have no reason for what I did,” adding that he has been diagnosed with borderline personality disorder.
Cox was apprehended Friday at a motel in south Jackson. Jackson Police Chief Joseph Wade mentioned that Cox is being questioned to determine her role in the incident, describing her as an acquaintance and possibly Callihan’s girlfriend.
Authorities issued an Amber Alert for Brunett’s daughters on Thursday after discovering Brunett’s body. The search led law enforcement to Jackson, Mississippi, where they found the suspect and a tragic scene. Callihan was arrested after a brief pursuit in a wooded area near a house where the 4-year-old’s body was found unburied. The surviving sister was taken to a hospital for treatment.
Jackson authorities found evidence suggesting the location may have been used for human trafficking, including small animal cages. Sheriff Daniel Edwards expressed sympathy for the affected families, urging the public to keep Callie’s family in their prayers.
An autopsy is scheduled to determine the exact cause of the child’s death. Jackson authorities are collaborating with human trafficking divisions to thoroughly investigate the crime scene.
Questions remain regarding why Callihan allegedly took the children to Jackson and the motive behind the child’s murder. Investigators believe Callihan had an intermittent relationship with Brunett. The Amber Alert issued earlier indicated that Callihan was wanted for questioning regarding a domestic violence incident that coincided with the abduction and resulted in a homicide.
The top priority for investigators is to interview Callihan and ensure the surviving 6-year-old receives proper care. Chief Travis emphasized the trauma the child endured, noting she will have to live with the experience for the rest of her life.
Cox was compliant during her arrest and will face charges for her involvement in the “horrific event.” She could potentially face capital murder charges or charges as an accessory.
A GoFundMe campaign was launched to support the Brunett family, covering funeral costs for Callie and her daughter, and aiding the surviving family members during this tragic time.
