Salim Ali: The Experienced Coach Ready for a Comeback

Former Mathare United and Ulinzi Stars coach Salim Ali has signaled his readiness to return to active coaching, expressing a keen interest in working with development-focused clubs. Despite receiving several offers locally, Ali has turned down opportunities that did not meet his standards or align with his vision for nurturing young talent.

Ali’s coaching career has been marked by notable achievements and a strong emphasis on developing coaching talent. He has been involved in training many of Kenya’s top CAF (Confederation of African Football) badge coaches, a role that underscores his commitment to elevating the coaching standards in the region. His work as a CAF educator has not only contributed to the growth of Kenyan football but has also allowed him to witness the rise of numerous qualified coaches who are shaping the future of the sport.

In an exclusive interview, Ali expressed his openness to opportunities both within Kenya and beyond its borders. “If I get that chance there is absolutely no problem. That is me – when we talk about coaching. I have had a few opportunities with teams but I declined because we did not agree on the terms of contract they were offering,” he stated. Ali’s approach highlights his dedication to not only finding the right fit for himself but also ensuring that any potential role aligns with his professional values and expectations.

Ali’s departure from Mathare United in 2021 and his subsequent stint with Posta Rangers, which ended in 2022, has left a significant void in Kenyan football. His tenure with Mathare United was characterized by his efforts to stabilize the team and drive performance amidst challenging conditions. His time with Posta Rangers further demonstrated his capability to manage teams and work under different circumstances.

One of the key factors influencing Ali’s decision to return to coaching is his focus on clubs that prioritize development. This aligns with his long-standing belief in fostering young talent and improving the overall standards of football coaching. “I am proud of the fast-rising coaching standards locally,” Ali remarked. “It is a very interesting scenario because I’m training all these coaches as a CAF educator. Most important is that the more the qualified coaches, the better the standards. Being part of this journey is quite fulfilling.”

Ali’s perspective on the evolving coaching landscape reflects a broader trend in Kenyan football where there is a growing emphasis on education and professional development. His role in this process has been instrumental, as he has been involved in mentoring and guiding many of the coaches who are now making significant contributions to the sport.

Despite the local offers he has declined, Ali remains hopeful and open to possibilities that align with his career goals. His willingness to consider opportunities beyond Kenya suggests a potential for his expertise to benefit other footballing nations. This readiness to explore international roles indicates his desire to continue making an impact on a larger scale, bringing his wealth of experience to new environments and challenges.

As the Kenyan football scene continues to evolve, the potential return of a seasoned coach like Salim Ali could provide a significant boost. His experience, coupled with his commitment to development, positions him as a valuable asset to any club or organization that shares his vision for advancing football standards.
