Governor Wamatangi’s Vision: Transforming Thika into the First City in Mount Kenya Region

Thika, a bustling town with a rich history and a population of over 700,000, is on the cusp of a major transformation. Governor Kimani Wamatangi has unveiled an ambitious plan to elevate Thika to city status, aiming to make it the first city in the Mount Kenya region.

In a strategic move to garner support and discuss the potential benefits of this transformation, Governor Wamatangi hosted a breakfast meeting at the Blue Post Hotel. Stakeholders and residents gathered to hear his vision for Thika and how this transition could usher in a new era of growth and development for the town.

Governor Wamatangi passionately outlined his plans, emphasizing the numerous advantages that city status would bring. He highlighted that Thika’s elevation to a city would attract more investment, enhance infrastructure, and create numerous job opportunities for residents. He urged the community to rally behind the project, stressing the importance of collective effort to realize this dream.

Thika has a storied past, once earning the nickname “Birmingham City of Africa” due to its favorable climate, agricultural productivity, urban planning, cultural heritage, and industrial growth, which paralleled that of Birmingham in the UK. Governor Wamatangi is determined to restore Thika’s former glory by transforming it into an industrial smart city.

This transformation is expected to be a catalyst for the region’s development, providing a model for other towns in the Mount Kenya area.

The meeting at Blue Post Hotel was a crucial step in engaging the community and stakeholders in the planning process. Governor Wamatangi emphasized that the success of this initiative hinges on the active participation and support of Thika’s residents. He assured them that their input and concerns would be taken into account as the project moves forward.

Thika’s strategic location and existing infrastructure make it a prime candidate for city status. The town is already a significant economic center in Kiambu County, with a vibrant industrial sector and a diverse economy. By achieving city status, Thika is poised to attract even more investment, boosting its economic profile and improving the quality of life for its residents.
