Tanzania has taken a significant leap forward in regional transportation by launching East Africa’s first electric Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) train. Equipped with the capability to reach speeds of up to 160 km/h, this electric train marks a milestone in modernizing the country’s railway infrastructure. On Friday, June 14, the inaugural trip of the SGR train carried passengers from Dar es Salaam to Morogoro, showcasing its efficiency and potential to enhance connectivity and travel efficiency across Tanzania.
The introduction of the electric SGR train underscores Tanzania’s commitment to advancing sustainable and efficient transportation solutions. Ordinary tickets for the journey from Dar es Salaam to Morogoro were priced at TSh 13,000 (approximately KSh 640) for adults and TSh 6,500 (approximately KSh 320) for children aged four to twelve, reflecting the accessibility and affordability aimed at benefiting both local commuters and travelers within the region.
