Former Mjini Primary School Pupil Donates Computers to Aid ICT Learning

Dr. Kamau Wairuri, a lecturer at the University of Edinburgh Napier in the UK, has donated computers to Mjini Primary School in Murang’a. This generous contribution, facilitated through the Kamau Wairuri Foundation, aims to equip students with essential ICT skills, addressing a critical gap in the school’s resources.

Bridging the Digital Divide

Dr. Wairuri’s visit to his former primary school, situated in the Mjini slums, shed light on the numerous challenges faced by learners due to the absence of adequate computer facilities. Despite government efforts to provide tablets, the existing resources have proven insufficient for the 510 students, including those in the Junior Secondary School (JSS) segment.

During a meeting with key stakeholders, including the headmistress, Christine Michubu, Dr. Wairuri learned about the severe shortfall in ICT equipment. The current government-issued tablets were far from meeting the demands of the school population, hindering effective learning and digital literacy.

A Call for Professional Involvement

“There is a dire need for professionals in various fields to give back to their community,” stated Dr. Wairuri. He emphasized the importance of ICT skills in modern education and urged the government to ensure thorough preparation before implementing educational programs. Reflecting on the collapsed laptop program, which initially laid a promising foundation for ICT education, Dr. Wairuri highlighted the necessity for sustainable and well-planned initiatives.

Dr. Wairuri’s donation is not merely a provision of physical resources but a step towards leveling the playing field for students in underprivileged areas. Headmistress Christine Michubu expressed her gratitude, noting the profound impact the donation will have on both students and teachers. “The tablets were not enough for the school population, thus the donation by our former pupil will make a huge difference to the learners and teachers,” she remarked. Michubu revealed that the school had proactively prepared a computer laboratory, anticipating that a donor might eventually come forward to support their ICT needs.

The new computers will enable teachers to work in a more efficient and resourceful environment, reducing their dependence on external cyber cafes for educational purposes.
