Sean “Diddy” Combs has returned the symbolic key to New York City following a recommendation by Mayor Eric Adams to “nullify and rescind” it. The decision came after CNN obtained video footage showing Combs physically assaulting his then-girlfriend Cassie Ventura in 2016, as outlined in a letter Adams sent to Combs on June 4.
In the letter, which CNN viewed, Adams expressed deep concern over the video, condemning Combs’ actions and standing in solidarity with survivors of domestic and gender-based violence. He stated that after internal discussions, the Key to the City committee advised revoking Combs’ key.
Combs, who grew up in Harlem, received the key in September 2023 as a recognition reserved for individuals whose public service and contributions to the common good are exceptional. City Hall confirmed the key was returned on June 10.
CNN reached out to Combs’ representatives for comment. Combs has faced multiple civil lawsuits, including allegations of sexual assault, of which he has denied many vehemently. Federal investigators are reportedly preparing to present accusers before a grand jury, indicating potential legal actions against Combs by the US Justice Department.
