Murang’a County has unveiled an ambitious Sh100 million program to enhance maize farming, particularly targeting lower regions of the county that are conducive to maize cultivation. Governor Irungu Kang’ata announced that the initiative will provide registered farmers with certified seeds and fertilizers to significantly increase maize yields.
In every ward, at least 500 farmers will benefit from the program, which is set to commence in October this year. The county administration has partnered with Joy Millers to secure a market for the maize, promising to purchase a 90-kilo sack for Sh3,500.
Governor Kang’ata emphasized the goal of commercializing maize farming in Murang’a, transitioning from subsistence farming to a more market-oriented approach. “The farmers will be at liberty to sell to the miller or find other buyers. Our aim is to commercialize maize farming in Murang’a,” he explained.
The program includes deploying agricultural extension officers to educate farmers on best practices, aiming to boost maize production and combat challenges like fall armyworms, which have previously hindered yields.
Murang’a County, which has three distinct ecological zones, will see maize farming concentrated in the lower regions, traditionally known for maize and bean cultivation. The upper parts are tea-dominant, while the middle zones focus on coffee and subsistence crops.
Local farmers have expressed optimism about the program. Peter Mwangi from Kamacharia Ward highlighted Murang’a’s favorable climatic conditions for maize farming, stating that the initiative will enhance food security. Millicent Ngonyo from Ithanga noted that the available land in the lower regions could become major maize plantations, similar to those in Rift Valley.
Kiru MCA Morris Thuku assured that the local assembly fully supports the program and will ensure that funds are utilized effectively. He added, “We appreciate the various projects by the county administration across agriculture, health, and youth sectors. With effective implementation, the living standards of locals will improve.”
