The Judiciary is collaborating with the police to establish an armoury at the Makadara Law Courts. This initiative mandates that armed security officers not stationed at the courts must surrender their firearms before entering the premises. These preliminary safety measures aim to ensure the utmost security for judiciary staff and service seekers ahead of the court’s scheduled reopening next Monday.
The court was temporarily closed last Thursday following a tragic incident in which Principal Magistrate Monica Kivuti was shot multiple times while seated in her makeshift courtroom. Despite being taken to the Nairobi Hospital intensive care unit for specialized treatment, she succumbed to her injuries two days later.
Chief Judiciary Registrar Winfrida Mokaya, accompanied by Judiciary Police Unit (JPU) Commander Samwel Ndung’u and Chief Inspector Japheth Ochoro, who oversees police operations at the Makadara Law Courts, visited the court on Monday. They conducted a thorough assessment of the security situation and agreed on implementing several short-term and long-term measures to enhance the facility’s safety and functionality.
