Innovating for the Future: Kenyan Universities Embrace Industry Collaboration and Technological Advancements

Prof. Olive Mugenda, Chairperson of the Board of Directors at Kenyatta University Teaching, Research, and Referral (KUTRRH) Hospital, emphasized the imperative role of local universities in accelerating economic transformation through innovation. Prof. Mugenda’s remarks highlighted the critical need for academic institutions to establish robust collaborations with industries to create a dynamic innovation ecosystem.

Prof. Mugenda articulated that universities are not only hubs of knowledge and research but also pivotal breeding grounds for groundbreaking innovations. “The rest of the country looks up to universities to create the requisite new knowledge that is a major driver of economic growth. It is our duty to come up with data that informs policy formulation. Apart from generating income, innovations get into the marketplace and offer solutions for longstanding challenges facing the world,” she stated.

She further underscored the importance of aligning academic research with industry needs, stressing that such synergies can drive technological advancements and produce impactful discoveries. Her call for greater cooperation between academia and industry was echoed by Prof. Isaiah Wakindiki, Vice Chancellor and CEO of KCA University.
