Rugby enthusiasts in Kenya are in for a treat as the highly anticipated Kabeberi 7s, the fourth leg of the National Rugby 7s Series, kicks off in Nairobi this weekend. Scheduled to take place at the historic RFUEA Grounds from August 23 to 25, 2024, the tournament promises to be a thrilling showcase of Kenya’s finest rugby talent, spanning Division One and Division Two men’s categories, along with an exciting women’s competition.
Excitement Builds for Kabeberi 7s
The Kabeberi 7s, one of the most prestigious events in Kenya’s rugby calendar, has a long-standing tradition of attracting top teams from across the country. This year’s edition is set to be no different, with the pools confirmed and teams gearing up for intense competition.
In Division One, Pool A features Kabras Sugar, who are coming off a victorious run at the Dala 7s in Kisumu last weekend. They will face stiff competition from Nakuru RFC, Strathmore Leos, and Impala RFC. Kabras Sugar’s recent form makes them the team to watch, but the unpredictability of 7s rugby ensures that no team can be underestimated.
Host team Mwamba RFC, a club with a rich history in Kenyan rugby, finds itself in Pool D alongside KCB, MMUST, and MKU Thika. Mwamba will be looking to capitalize on home advantage and the recent financial boost they’ve received to make a strong showing in front of their fans.
Sponsorships Breathe New Life into Mwamba RFC
In the lead-up to the tournament, Mwamba RFC received a significant financial injection of Kshs. 4.25 million through sponsorships from several companies. This sponsorship package includes contributions from Kenya Breweries, through its flagship brand Tusker, a betting company, and CIC Insurance. The funds are expected to provide much-needed support for the club as they strive to reclaim their former glory.
Mwamba Club chairman, Jason Braganza, expressed his gratitude for the sponsorships, acknowledging the challenges the team has faced in recent times. “We’ve had our struggles, but this partnership is a game-changer for us. It will help us get back to our best and compete at the highest level,” said Braganza. The financial support is timely, as Mwamba prepares to take on formidable opponents in Pool D, where every match will be a battle for supremacy.
Women’s Competition Returns
The Kabeberi 7s will also see the return of the women’s competition, marking the second leg of the series. The women’s pools are equally stacked, with teams eager to showcase their prowess on the national stage. In Pool A, Impala Roans, Kenya Harlequins, and Western Spears will battle it out, while Mwamba Ladies headline Pool B alongside Meu Ladies and NYS Ladies. Pool C features Nothern Suburbs, Ruck IT, and Nakuru Ladies, promising a competitive edge in every game.
Division Two Action
The Division Two category, which provides a platform for emerging talent, has also attracted a diverse range of teams. Pool A sees Homeboyz Rugby, Mean Machine, Kiambu Rugby, and Kenya Prisons squaring off, while Pool B features Zetech University, Sigalagala Polytechnic, Meru RFC, and JKUAT. With teams like Kabarak University and Northern Suburbs in Pool C, and AP Warriors and NYS Spades in Pool D, the competition is set to be fierce.
