Waiguru: Mt Kenya Region is Rich With Qualified Leaders for National Positions

As the race for the Deputy President’s position intensifies, Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru has firmly asserted that the Mt Kenya region is not lacking in qualified leaders for national roles. Waiguru’s statements come amid growing discussions and speculation about potential candidates from the region for prominent national positions.

During a recent address to Mwea residents, Waiguru emphasized that the region boasts numerous seasoned leaders with proven track records. She asserted that no single individual should be deemed the sole candidate for such positions, reinforcing that leadership opportunities should be open to those who have demonstrated competence and dedication.

In March this year, President William Ruto hinted at a possible future where a woman could be considered as a running mate. Ruto, during the Women Governors Caucus G7 Strategy launch in Nairobi, indicated that this move would align with the UDA party’s commitment to the two-thirds gender rule. This statement has since fueled speculation about potential female candidates, with Waiguru’s name frequently surfacing in discussions.

Waiguru, who has been a prominent figure in the region’s political landscape, highlighted her role in representing President Ruto at a recent event at Baricho Catholic Church. The governor acknowledged this as a gesture of the President’s confidence in her leadership abilities, further bolstering her political profile.

Addressing the residents of Mwea while distributing socio-economic empowerment items, Waiguru took the opportunity to reflect on the accomplishments of her administration. She pointed out the successful implementation of numerous development projects, including the construction of 18 modern markets in Kirinyaga County, alongside 11 additional markets funded by the national government.

Waiguru also highlighted the forthcoming upgrades to local healthcare facilities, with commitments from the national government to equip the Kimbimbi and Kianyaga Level 4 Hospitals once construction is completed. Additionally, the governor mentioned plans to improve the county’s road network, with tarmacking projects set to enhance connectivity and infrastructure.

The governor’s remarks underscored the significance of the region’s unity and its continued support for President Ruto’s development agenda. She cautioned against divisive politics, stressing that the region’s focus should remain on collaborative development efforts. Waiguru emphasized that the region cannot afford to be in opposition, advocating for a unified approach to achieve progress and prepare for the 2027 elections.

Waiguru’s call for unity and a focus on development was echoed by her recent endorsement from the Njuri Ncheke Council in Meru. The council’s blessing for Waiguru to pursue higher political positions underscores her standing within the region and her potential to play a significant role in future national leadership.

In the context of the ongoing political developments, 48 MPs from the Mt Kenya region recently endorsed Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki as their leader. The MPs expressed concerns about the lack of a proper channel to address their developmental issues and priorities, which they believe has impeded the region’s progress.

As Waiguru continues to champion development and unity, her leadership and vision for the Mt Kenya region remain central to the political discourse. With the 2027 elections on the horizon, the governor’s emphasis on performance-based leadership and collaborative efforts sets a clear path for the region’s future political landscape.

Waiguru’s leadership and commitment to her county’s development reflect her broader vision for the region, highlighting the need for qualified and dedicated leaders to steer national agendas. As the conversation around potential candidates for national positions evolves, Waiguru’s statements reaffirm the richness of leadership talent within Mt Kenya and the region’s readiness to contribute significantly to Kenya’s national progress.
