Meru Woman Stranded in Lebanon Finally Returns Home Thanks to Kind Strangers

In a remarkable story of resilience and hope, a 33-year-old woman from Meru County, Kenya, who had been stranded in Lebanon, has finally returned home. Judith Gatwiri traveled to Lebanon seeking better opportunities to support her family but found herself in a dire situation when she suddenly became unreachable in March 2024. Her journey back home highlights the challenges many face when seeking employment abroad and the power of kindness from strangers.

Judith’s troubles began when she left her home in Meru for Lebanon, hoping to secure a job that would provide for her family. Initially, she maintained regular communication with her family, assuring them of her safety. However, on March 6, 2024, she abruptly went offline, leaving her family in a state of distress and uncertainty. It later emerged that Judith had been thrown in jail by her employer, a situation that left her family anxious and fearful about her fate.

The family received a message from a woman claiming to be Judith’s friend, informing them of her incarceration. However, the details were unclear, and the family was left to grapple with the possibility that Judith might be imprisoned for one or two years. The news was devastating, and the family felt helpless as they tried to find a way to bring her back home.

As the family continued to search for solutions, their plight caught the attention of two strangers, Kaibonga and Steven Kaloo, who decided to step in and offer their assistance. These two individuals were moved by the family’s situation and took it upon themselves to help. The family had been struggling to raise the KSh 40,000 required to secure Judith’s release and ticket back home, and the generosity of these strangers was a lifeline.

Kaibonga, who is also from Meru, reached out to the family and offered to pay for Judith’s ticket. This gesture brought a glimmer of hope to the family, who had been facing insurmountable challenges. With the funds provided by Kaibonga and support from Steven Kaloo, arrangements were made for Judith’s return to Kenya.

The reunion at the airport was an emotional one. After months of being imprisoned in Lebanon, Judith was finally back home with her family. Although she had endured difficult conditions, including time in a cell, she was in good health. The family was overjoyed to have her back and expressed their deep gratitude for the kindness and support they received from strangers who made her return possible.
