Springfield Community Gardens (SCG) has flourished with the support of multiple 2501 grants, most recently in 2022, enabling the organization to expand its footprint across the Springfield, Missouri area. These grants have facilitated the establishment of 17 community gardens, three urban farms, a community food forest, and a test kitchen, serving diverse local communities.
Central to SCG’s mission is the promotion of regenerative agriculture through sustainable farming practices. This approach emphasizes recycling farm waste, enhancing soil health, and fostering resilience against environmental challenges like extreme weather and pests. SCG actively engages communities in certified naturally grown gardens and maintains Good Agriculture Practices (GAP) certifications across all its farms.
The organization provides free workshops and personalized mentoring, particularly targeting veterans and underserved groups. These initiatives empower participants with knowledge in crop farming and business development, enabling them to establish and manage small-scale farms effectively.
Maile Auterson, Founding Executive Director of SCG, underscores the holistic benefits of regenerative agriculture, highlighting its role in nurturing relationships among farmers, land, and animals. Auterson emphasizes that sustainable farming practices not only sustain soil health but also support community well-being.
The 2501 grants have not only supported SCG’s operational continuity but also facilitated the expansion of their community outreach efforts, including programs for children through their community 4-H initiative. Participants like Molly Fralick, a veteran and single mother, credit SCG’s education and technical support for helping them launch successful agricultural ventures, fulfilling personal dreams and contributing to local food systems.
The 2501 Program, administered by the USDA, aims to ensure equitable participation of underserved and veteran farmers in USDA programs. Applications for the grant are open until July 5, reflecting ongoing commitment to supporting sustainable agriculture and community development nationwide.
