Government Reinforces Commitment to Tea Industry through Dialogue and Collaboration

The Kenyan government has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the farming community, particularly the tea industry, through active dialogue and collaboration. This was highlighted during a visit by Agriculture Principal Secretary (PS) Dr. Paul Rono to Kapset Tea Factory, where he lauded the leadership for their innovative approaches that have significantly contributed to the growth and success of tea production operations.

During his visit to the Kapset Tea Factory, Dr. Rono underscored the government’s dedication to reviewing and enhancing the operations of tea factories across the country. He emphasized the importance of ensuring that production processes, equipment, and overall efficiency at these factories meet industry standards. The PS noted that by closely examining these aspects, the government aims to identify areas for improvement that would lead to better outcomes for both the factories and the farmers they serve.

Dr. Rono’s visit to Kapset Tea Factory is part of a broader initiative by the Ministry of Agriculture to assess the challenges faced by farmers and the tea industry as a whole. He acknowledged that factories like Kapset often encounter specific issues such as supply chain problems, labor shortages, and financial constraints. The PS emphasized that by identifying these challenges, the government can tailor its support to address the most pressing needs of the industry.

Furthermore, Dr. Rono assured local tea farmers that their concerns are being heard and will be addressed by the government. He expressed optimism about the future of the tea industry, noting that the government is considering potential initiatives and interventions designed to boost the sector and improve the livelihoods of farmers. This could include measures such as providing financial assistance, enhancing market access, or introducing new policies aimed at increasing the profitability of tea farming.

The PS’s visit to Kapset Tea Factory followed a similar tour of Momul Tea Factory earlier that day. These visits are part of the Ministry’s ongoing mission to enhance tea quality standards in factories and advocate for increased bonuses and monthly prices for farmers. Dr. Rono highlighted that improving the quality of tea production is a crucial area of focus for the government and a top priority for tea factories across the country.

In addition to addressing operational challenges, the government is also committed to fostering better communication between itself and the tea industry. Dr. Rono emphasized that by maintaining open lines of communication, both the factories and the farmers can receive the necessary support and resources to thrive in an increasingly competitive market. He noted that the government is keen on ensuring that the tea industry remains a vital part of Kenya’s economy and that farmers continue to benefit from their hard work.

Dr. Rono was warmly received at Kapset Tea Factory by Vice Chairperson Director Ian Kipsang of Kapset and Rorok Tea Factories, who represented Chairperson Vincent Terer Mitei, currently on official duty following the just-concluded KTDA National Chairmanship elections. The visit was attended by various local leaders, including the Area Member of County Assembly (MCA), ward administrators, Director Baliach, Turgut Kapset and Rorok staff, area chiefs, tea buying center committees, and other dignitaries.
